Beginner Candlemaking 101

Ok, so you're new to candlemaking. No problem! All you need is a few household items and a creative mind. I really advise those that are just starting to avoid running out to the nearest craft store and buying everything having to do with candlemaking. The reason is you really need to get a feel for what you're doing first. You may find out you don't like making candles.

Ready?

Here's the supplies you'll need to get started:
leftover wax from old candles
kite string
double boiler/crock pot/slow cooker
small glass container, perhaps one you took old wax from.
candy thermometer

Well, now that you've gathered your items, heat the wax in the double boiler/crock pot/slow cooker, but make sure it never rises above 180 degrees. While the wax is heating up, you have time to set up your glass container and kite string. You will need something to prop the string up with; small sticks, pencils or toothpicks usually work. Cut a piece of string a little longer than the length of the glass container. Dip the string in the wax that has melted. Do this a few times, letting the wax harden on the string in between each dip. This is called priming the wick. It helps the wick burn better. Set up your wick in the container with your toothpick. Once the wax in the double boiler is melted, either ladle or pour a small amount (about 1/4") into the container CAREFULLY. This is very important. What matters most is your safety. The wax is VERY HOT. It may even help to use some old pot holders or oven mitts when handling the double boiler. Let the small amount harden before adding anymore wax so it serves to stabilize your wick. After it's dry you may pour more into the container. Make sure you save some wax however because as wax cools, it contracts and you'll have a sunken area in your container. This is normal. All that needs to be done is this: poke a few holes near the wick, then fill the candle to the original fill line.
