ANNOUNCEMENTS!

*July 25, 2000.*

Since posting my queries to various message boards and surname databases, I have received numerous emails from individuals looking for a connection with my family tree. For the most part, folks have been very polite and helpful, and I even found a cousin! :-)

But once in a while, I'll get an email from someone saying, "Send me information about your so and so line." or "Please send me info on such and such in your such and such line." without providing any information THEY have found. I think most of you can relate to me when I say that although I am very eager and willing to share information about my ancestors to help fellow researchers, I am also very protective of said information and will not "spill the beans" to just anyone that emails me. Not only do I consider the previous request examples rude, but also selfish, which is the total opposite of what genealogy is about.

All I and other genealogists are asking is that people use a bit more common sense and courtesy when emailing other genealogists, particularly those they do not know. Approach queries posted on message boards and surname databases as you would an invitation to a dinner party. When you attend a dinner party, you bring the host or hostess a nice gift --- a bottle of wine, a nice candle....etc. When the party is over, you thank the host/hostess for their hospitality. A day or so later, you send the host/hostess a thank you note. Well, a genealogist's email inbox is their "dinner party" and when you stop by, be sure to bring a gift --- the name(s) you're researching, vital stats (if available), where you found the person's query....etc. And be sure to thank the person for taking the time to read your request and/or helping you in your search.

You'd be surprised how much easier your research will be if you follow the above protoccol. Hey...it helped me find a cousin! :-)

Web Manager of Family Reunion

Hello!! Welcome to my little cyberspace home. Make yourself comfortable. I believe that knowing one's past is the key to a better future. This is one of the many reasons why I decided to do my own personal research of my ancestral tree and create a site dedicated to my own personal research, as well as help others researching their African lineage. Being an African American, I feel that it's very important to know my ancestors' history, both good and bad (hopefully not too bad! :-))in order to instill a sense of pride in myself, my future children, and all present family members. Actually, I don't look at this as research, but rather as searching for buried treasure. So far, I've already found one distant cousin via the internet (ain't technology da bomb!?)and who knows how many more are out there! If you're just as curious about your past as I am, check out these resources below, as well as the surnames that I am researching. If you have any questions, feel free to email me! Who knows? We may be related!!!
