I am currently in the process of researching my Norwegian roots in an attempt to fill the Johnson family tree requested by my grandmother. At the semi completion of this tree I will begin researching my American roots as I attempt to expand on my Tilley family tree. Our family biographer is Libbey Livingston. She has traveled to Norway and gathered all the information I have on this family tree. This page would not be here if not for all her hard work and research.
Please take a moment to join the Norwegian mailing list. We are over 500 strong and growing. The information you can learn will be invaluable to your research and others are waiting to learn your history as well.

Johan Johansen Brekken's first born child was Lars Johansen Borseth Brekken. Lars's mother was Marit Anderdatter Furu who did not marry Johan. It is unclear why Johan raised his son instead of his mother. Lar's first wife was Ingeborg Nilsdatter who passed away after bearing their three children : Daniel (my g-great grandfather), Thorey and Maret. He then married Magnhild before leaving Norway. On May 16, 1882, Lars and Magnhild packed up their 5 oldest children and left Norway to settle in Suttons Bay, MI. The home they left behind, Borsethauge which is located below Borsetbrekken, became desserted. Lars was a masterful carpenter. He was the foreman for the construction of the First Lutheran Church, a church that still serves the Suttons Bay community today. He passed on strong carpentry skills to his sons. He was described as lean and strong. Magnhild was always referred to as a "good sized" woman. She was tall and big boned and wore her hair straight back in a bun. Her faith in God was central to her life. She is remembered as saying "read the New Testament, it's more relevant to how you should live your life today--read the Old Testament if you have time.

Fagerli (Thorey's wife), Leroy Ingvald (Thorey & Lena's oldest), Maret Johnson (Anton Solem's wife) ***Note: Daniel, Martin, Thorey and Maret all had the same father, Lars Johansen Borseth Brekken. However, Daniel, Thorey and Maret's mother was Ingeborg Nilsdatter who died in 1875. Magnhild Evensdatter (Lar's second wife) was Martin's mother and raised the whole family. Marie and Olena Fagerlie were sisters. I know nothing of their background and would welcome any information about them.

This is my grandmother Joyce Fae Johnson Russell with her oldest daughter Linda, her youngest son Joe and his wife,"my" Auntie Peg. I lost my grandmother March 24, 1999. With her went my heart and soul to keep her company for eternity. Along with their children, Joe and Peg made sure that my granny stayed long enough to help me and enjoy researching the ever-extending Johnson tree.
