New Insights on Sexual Identity

A Personal Letter
From: jim@straight.org

Dear Friends-

I'm working to overcome my homosexuality. It's difficult at times, but I find when I make the effort, it can be done.

From the age of seven to my 20s, I was 100% gay. If the most beautiful supermodel came on to me, I'd have had absolutely zero arousal.

With the insights this site is exploring, I've found my attraction increasing. Deep inside, it's actually quite natural to be attracted to women. They can be warm, soft, caring, faithful, supportive. I was blocking it.

I'm not saying this changed instantly. Many forces combined to drive my same-sex attractions. It's not always easy to change long-standing thoughts and feelings, and behaviors.

After much "two steps forward, one step back," I've made good progress. I no longer go to gay bars or cruise the streets. I haven't had any sex with men for more than a year and a half.

Support groups are very helpful. Some participants make fairly easy, rapid progress. Others, like me, find it more difficult. Meetings can also help you overcome promiscuity and other addictions.

I believe sexualized lifestyles - both homosexual and heterosexual - create many problems.

I don't think homosexuality is the world's number one problem, but it is a problem for me. I've found the gay life is often lonely, empty, promiscuous, driven by age and appearance. I know a few gay men who are not that way, and all too many who are. It's easy to get caught up in these things - certainly for me.

Heterosexuals aren't perfect either, but I find many problems are even more prevalent among gay men. I've reached my conclusions after years in the gay world, exploring these issues with dozens of gay men, reading a number of eye-opening books and much of serious thought.

If you're interested in communicating further on these concerns, let me know. Even if you want to remain gay, you could find this site interesting.

     Sincerely,
     Jim X

PS: If you disagree with me, I hope it's clear: I'm not asking you to justify yourself to me. We don't need to get into an argument about all this.
