Jean Otis
(known
as John) was born in 1680 at Dovers in New Hampshire. His father,
Richard
Otheys married three times and Jean was born from his second marriage,
with Anna Shuah about 1676. In 1689, their house was ransacked
and destroyed by local Indians. His father Richard was killed and
the family was brought in captivity by the assailants (probably Abénaquis)
as far as in New France. 9 years old, Jean was given there to an
old Indian woman from the Côte de Beaupré where he was baptized.
In 1703, he marries Cécile Poulin, then, on February 9, 1733,
Marie-Françoise
Gagné, also widowed. About 1743, he obtained a three arpents
wide land at Saint-Joachim; he will settle there in 1750.
He had 6 children with Marie-Françoise, among those Jean-Baptiste
who will continue the lineage. Jean Otis died at Baie-Saint-Paul
on September 16, 1760 at the age 80.
