About 1916 in corresponding with Dr. James Harwood Closson of Germantown, Pa, he gave me the following letter as not pertaining to his branch of the Closson Family.

Letter:

Jackson, Mich.
Feb. 11, 1889

Dr. James Harwood Closson
70 West Chelton Ave.
Germantown, Penn.

Dear Sir,

Your letter of Oct. 24, 1888 addressed to Charles A Closson (correct address 58 Grant St., Chicago, Ill.) has been handed me for reply thereto.
I begin with Charles Closson's great grandfather and his brother, Jon and Caleb Closson.
Caleb Closson had on son Asa and seven girls whose names I do not know.
Jon Closson had five sons, - Jon, Amasa Moss, Edward, Caleb and Thomas, also one daughter who died at 18 years of age.
Jon had 12 or 14 children whose names I do not know.
Amasa Moss Closson had 3 sons & 3 daughters, - Amasa M., one girl who died at 4 years of age, Myron, Sarah, Lynda J., and Aaron.
Edward Closson had 2 sons, Lewis and George.
Gaeb had, I think, 12 children whose names I cannot give.
Thomas had 2 sons and 5daughters, - Dempster, George, Maria, Ruth, Emily, Polly and Alice.
(.........................................later generations given but not copied here.)

Yours truly,

A. M. Closson

The above letter proved later to be the tie-in between the Cable Closson family of RI and NY and the Caleb and John Closson family of Canada, Jefferson Co., NY and the Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota States families of to-day.

The National Archives of Canada at Ottawa, Canada show that Caleb's step-father Oliver Baker had a 999 year lease at Skenesboro, Charlotte Co., NY which on Oliver Baker's death Caleb Closson improved. The lease was from Major Skene, a Major in the British Army. When the war broke out, Major Skene was in England so Skenesboro was confiscated and the residents taken prisoners. Caleb joined Burgoyne and at the end of the War was granted land in Augusta, Upper Canada, on the bank of the St. Lawrence River near Maitland.
John probably joined his brother Caleb in Canada. There is no record of any British Service but among the sales of land in Leeds’s Co., Canada has, - Nathaniel Brown Jr. sold the front half of lot No. 34 in the 8th Concession in 1811 to John Closson. Leeds & Greenville Cos. adjoin so this John Closson may be Caleb's brother.
The John Closson families are in the U.S. as shown by the U.S. Census of 1830 for Orleans Township, Jefferson Co., NY. the New York State Census for 1835 and U.S. Census of 1840 for Orleans Township, Jefferson Co., NY.
Deeds dated Mar 4, 1835, Oct 13, 1837, Sep 9, 1846 and Nov 3, 1851 all relating to john and Lydia Closson and Caleb and Tryphena Closson record the sales of land where they had lived. There are no Closson Wills on file in Jefferson Co., NY.

Above Note- For Caleb Closson Family see No.191 p 155 Josiah Closson Family. 1952)

Notes for MATILDA BULL:

Notes for COREY SPENCER:
Corey served as Private 1st Div. - Capt. Squire Milands Co., Col. Waterman's Division during 1777 in the American Revolutionary Army (15 days to 6 moths.)
Granted good farmland in Upper Canada on Lot 49 of !1st Conc., Northwest Carrying Place ( arrived at Spencer homestead on north shore of Picton Harbor on May 23, 1793. Part of group of settlers from Dutchess County, NY). Arrived with his father and brother, Abner. Corey was approved for membership Jan. 28, 1813 to Society of Friends at Adolphustown meeting. He was not a member in good standing prior to this because of his time spent in the army.

It was the 23rd day of may 1793, when Corey and Matilda arrived at the site on north shore of Picton Bay, where they were to build their first home. Picton Bay was the called "Grand Bay" and the second home they eventually built there was named "Towerpoint". Their first house was of logs. It bordered on pasture land which came to be called "Spencer's Commons". The "Commons" are within the eastern city limits of Picton and have since been divided into building lots.

Corey Spencer served for a short time during 1777 in the American Revolutionary Army. This fact is not generally known to Canadians. Found in the Patriot Index (publication year 1973) of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, on page 636, is Corey's name together with his wife's name, Matilda Bull. His rank: Private. Year and length of service: 1777, 15 days to 6 months, and place of his enlistment or service: Massachusetts.

Proof for this is also found in the compilation from Massachusetts Archives published by the Secretary of the Commonwealth (17 Volumes): "Massachusetts Soldiers & Sailors of the Revolution War" (Vol. 14 SHA to ST page 716:) "Corey Spencer, Apr6 to Apr20, 1777 - 15 days - PVT 1St Div - Capt. Squire Midland’s Co., Col. Waterman's Division."
Corey and his family have always been known as United Empire Loyalists, before and since, their becoming citizens of Canada. His son, Gideon made his home on Lot no. 2, in the 8th Concession of Thurlow, Hastings County, this lot having been granted to Corey Spencer under proclamation by the Canadian government. This fact of grant was in the Historical Atlas of Hastings and Prince Edward County, published in 1878 by H. Belden & Company.

She applied for a widows pension for the War of 1812, widow of Solomon Griffin on 11 Nov., 1872, was rejected for term of in sufficient service 20 Feb., 1873. (He served 48 days, 60 was at that time being required for pension). She was 92 at the time.

The Government was going to either reopen her widows pension file application or approve it, (from a letter from her attorney), Mary Griffin died about ten years ago, or soon after making application for pension, do not know what time, J. L. Whitehead P.M., dated 5-25-1883.

Family lore passed down, had a story that Mary Bull Griffin inherited some land in New York, and she and Soloman went by stagecoach to New York to clam it. They had many hardships, encountered Indians, etc. and after arriving in New York found that buildings had been built on this land and it would take some time to settle the estate. Mary and Solomon had left several children back home, so she did not want to wait for settlement so they returned home. Later they found that the land had been leased for 99 years, so they just forgot about it. (from Pearl gravely Gr, Gr, Gr, grand-daughter)

He married (4) TRYPHENA SPENCER Abt. 1841, daughter of JOHN SPENCER and NANCY WARNER.

Notes for CALEB CLOSSON:
He was called to the State Legislature of WI in 1856 and he made the trip to McGregor, IA to celebrate both this occasion and the arrival of his "name-sake" grandson Caleb Closson son of Albert & Frances Closson.

It is not known just when Tryphosa (Spencer) Closson died, before 1834 but how long before, or whether Hannah the 2nd wife of Caleb had any children, possibly Hannah M. may have been the daughter of Hannah and Caleb. No gravestone for Tryphosa (Spencer) Closson has been found.

The dates of birth of the children are confusing by conflicting records, - census, pension and family, and the many moves made by the family and lack of educational facilities in the new areas to which the family moved and settled.
