Notes for Clyde Paxman Carter:
This Note is from Ruth's records:
Weighed 2 lbs. at birth, premature.
Liked fishing, hunting & golf. Suffered a heart attack on the golf course.
Struck by lightning several times during his life. First time was after returning home after coon hunting with his hound. Being wet and cold he decided to sit facing the wood stove with his feet on the open door to warm them. Lightning struck the chimney, traveled to earth and struck him. It paralyzed him from the chest down for 3 days. Later bounced into a blackberry patch when struck again While picking blackberries during the approach of an oncoming storm. He was standing on a set of old spring tooth harrows that had been abandoned in that area. Lightning hit the old implement, sending him on a prickly voyage. Later in life while farming on his homestead in Jonesville, he was struck when working in the milk house after chores. He was washing down the bulk tank there when lightning struck the ground near the spring, traveled down the water line and into the milk house, the shock sat him abruptly on the water covered cement floor. One last time that I remember well, was when he was out fishing with his son John and one of his friends. Upon returning to his parked pick-up truck , he was approaching it when a bolt of lightning came down a telephone pole beside the truck, connected with the truck just as he reached for the door handle. The bolt then jumped to him catapulting him backwards to do somersaults down the embankment onto the trout brook. His dog was singed and burnt hair could be smelled for a week on poor old Laddy dog. Clyde was always one to sit out on the lawn under the maple tree there during the approach of electrical storms. His family would often become faint hearted and depart for the safety of the house long before he would take cover. To explain this act, one would have to see for oneself the area of the home. It stood high upon the mountainside overlooking a large and beautiful valley. The approach of a storm was a wonder and beauty to behold. Little wonder why it held such a fascination for him as he loved that place, as I did . To this day I thank my heavenly Father for allowing me to call that part of the vineyard home.
He is buried in Riverview Cemetery near the east entrance near the road.
