William Hough, an unmarried house wright (carpenter) from Cheshire, arrived in 1640 in the Mass. Colony in Rev. Richard Blinman's party. He married Sarah Caulkins in 1645, and they probably have more descendants in the U.S. than any other Hough immigrant. Their children were Hannah, Abiah (daughter) Sarah, Samuel, John, William, Jonathan, Deborah, Abigail and Anna. Most descendants stayed in New England until after 1790.
In determining the descendants of the one known immigrant, William Hough the carpenter of Cheshire and Massachusetts, one must remember that several people who are mentioned in the records have not been successfully traced. They may have died out, but more likely many moved with parts of their towns into new areas.
William Hough (b in 1619 in Westchester, Cheshire, England - d in 1683 in New London) m in 1645 in Massachusetts to Sarah Caulkins. Their first three children were born in Gloucester, MA and the forth, Samuel in Saybrook, CT and the remainder in New London.

Notes for Jonathan Hough:
Jonathan is the first male to move into limbo in the records. In the summer of 1688, one Jonathan Hough bough land in Windham from Hugh Caulkins, and on June 12, 1692 Jonathan Hough was chosen townsman for Windham (Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, p 468). The town of Windham was formed in 1689 and the strong presumption is that Jonathan Hough, son of William, joined with his Caulkins kin and others in establishing the town of Windham.
Jonathan has been considered by genealogists as a "probably died young" case because he disappeared from the records in New London. Alternatively, Jonathan of Windham could have been an immigrant whose records have not been found.

She stated Walter was a surgeon in Col. Canfield's regiment for 2 years. They married in 1782 and lived in Canterbury, Windham Co. Samuel L. Hough stated he was son of the couple. Erastus Hough of Chaplin in Windham Co. stated he was brother to Walter and that Walter served in 1775 and in 1777 before he became a surgeon. Lucy Dutton of VT and OH stated she was reared in the home of Mr. John Hough of Canterbury, father of Dr. Walter Hough. After Martha died in 1841, Walter's children Samuel L. of Canterbury and Rev. John of Windham, OH in 1843 made a further claim for a retroactive increase in their mother's pension.
