Isaac ran away from home and was taken in by Frank Robinson of Long Lake, NY. He was never formally adopted, but he used the name of Robinson. He settled in Hamilton County, Long Lake, NY in 1841.

The Family of John Closson of Rockingham, Vermont
My purpose is to show as briefly as is practical an outline of our branch of the Closson family. All the information I have of the John Closson and his ancestors was obtained from "The Timothy Closson Branch of the Josiah Closson Family of New England", by William G. Closson, Civil Engineer of Flushing NY, a copy of which is in the New York Public Library on Fifth Ave at 42nd St. Mr. William G. Closson has devoted much of his spare time for many years to the study of the Closson Family and has accumulated a priceless fund of information, and our family is very much indebted to him. He has been kind enough to read and check this paper. Much of the information on the more recent Closson's is from that sent me by you and by others.
I shall attempt to give a brief history of our family by giving an account of the ancestors and descendants of John Closson of Rockingham, Vermont. I will first deal with John Closson's descendants, and will acquaint you with your relation to him, and our relation to each other.
John Closson was born Nov. 18, 1776, died about 1821. He married Abiah ______. We do not know her family name but from her gravestone at Saxton River, VT. we know that she later married Luther Bixby, and died in 1838. John and Abiah ______ Closson had six children: Abigale Daley, John A., Betsy, William, Mary and Isaac.
Abigale Daley married Silas Pratt Stewart, John A. left home and all trace of him has been lost, and Betsy married Elisha Smith. So we doubtless have numerous cousins named Stewart and Smith. Mary died unmarried. That leaves William and Isaac.
Isaac, born Aug. 5, 1818, was taken into a family by the name of Robinson while still in Vermont. He was never formally adopted, but he used the name of Robinson. He married Christiana Keller and moved to Long Lake, Hamilton Co., NY Isaac and Christiana Closson Robinson are direct ancestors of all the Long Lake Robinson's, and several of you will recognize them as grandparents. They had eight children in this order: Amos, John, William, Elizabeth, Emily, Ann, Charles and Boyden.
William the brother of Isaac was born Jan. 19, 1812. He married Elizabeth Davenport in 1827. He was a banker in Northampton, Mass. for several years and died there Mar. 6, 1884. William and Elizabeth had seven children: Harrison, Murray, Aurelia, William, John Byron, Lewis and Eugene. Lewis, William and Eugene died in infancy, and Aurelia married John Charter and had no children.
Harrison was born July 23, 1828, married twice and had four children. Harrison was my grandfather. He died Jan. 23, 1897.
Murray was born June 5, 1833, died Dec. 24, 1910. He married twice and had eight children; some of whom are now living. (I need much more information to complete the descendants of Harrison and Murray but I'd be glad to share such data as I have).
John Byron was born March 14, 1839 Northampton, Mass., and died there Feb. 19, 1893. He married Susan Johnson and had two children: John Herbert who died at Northampton, and Ida Brewer who died at Springfield Gardens NY Oct. 21, 1937, both without issue.
Ancestors of John Closson Born Nov. 18, 1776
John Closson was the son of Wilbur who was born about 1734. Wilbur married Mrs. Elizabeth Daley, it is said in New York City. The moved to what is now Putnam County NY He served in the Third and Sixth Regiments in the American Revolution. Wilbur had a brother Ishabod. A descendant of his is now a lawyer in Manhattan. Wilbur and Elizabeth had seven children: John (above), Anna, Elnathan, Elizabeth, Daley, Charles Cane, William and Roswell.
Wilbur Closson was the son of Timothy and Eunice (Poppleton) Closson. Timothy was born about 1729, lived in Dutchess County, NY during part of the Revolution, and moved to Rockingham VT. where he died in 1807. He served in New York and Vermont Regiments during the Revolution. Timothy and Eunice had at least five children: Wilbur, Abigale, Hannah, Ichabod and Roswell
There is no record found so far of the parents of Timothy. Family tradition says he came from England to Virginia, but it is believed from the family names and associations that he came from Rhode Island. This is the only step that lacks reasonably good proof, but we believe his father was Nathan Closson who married Alice Hart (of the Harts who founded what is now Millbrook NY). They had a son Timothy born about 1729 in Rhode Island. The family moved to Dutchess County NY It may be that Timothy's father was Caleb, a brother of Nathan. Caleb and Nathan were born at Little Compton, RI on April. 16, 1688 and Feb. 3, 1694, respectively. The father of Caleb and Nathan (the grandfather of Timothy if he did belong to this Rhode Island Family) was Josiah Closson, born in 1656, who married Mary Williamson, a daughter of Timothy Williamson a Captain in King Philip's War. Josiah Closson was also a soldier in that war, credited to the town of Woburn, Mass. After the war Josiah moved to Marshfield, Mass. where he married Mary Williamson, and where two of his eight children were born. Benjamin Church, the leader of the Colony Forces in King Philip's War founded Little Compton RI, and Josiah Closson followed his leader there about 1682 where many of the family lived till after the Revolution.
If you have followed this carefully you have probably deduced that Josiah Closson was the great great grandfather of the John Closson we began with. John Closson was great great grandfather to me and too many of you.
In going back further we do not fin facts recorded in probate records, files of deeds, or the many other places that are visited in the search for the facts of family histories. But it is believed that Josiah Closson was born in eastern Massachusetts. It is believed that his father was either Daniel or Nehemiah Closson. Though no evidence has been found to support the statement, tradition insists that Josiah's father came from England, settled in Massachusetts.
