A moment she'll never forget. . .

Not long after earning her TD, Gwen Nevin and her dog Savvy started working toward a TDX. "Longer tracks, more age, and more obstacles than you can imagine," said Gwen.
"I was always asking if Savvy was ready to enter a test." Finally, a week before the close, she entered the Moraine Tracking Club TDX on Halloween 2004. Sure enough, their name was drawn.

Gwen knew Savvy was capable of doing it, but also knew that a lot of things had to go right to pass a TDX. She was looking forward to the experience, but also tried not to set her expectations too high.

Savvy drew Track 5. This ended up being the lucky track of the day. Savvy put her nose down at the start and eagerly tracked her way through 852 yards that included a ditch, 2 road crossings, a flushed covey of quail (not planned), a small woods, and, finally, a meander through another ditch where she found the glove.

Shortly after they found their final article, Darlene Long came out to the field to congratulate them. She looked at the excited team and said,"Gwen, I think she's ready!" Also out to the field came Lois Breslow with hugs for Gwen and special tasty treats for Savvy. All in all, it was a moment Gwen will never forget.

Gwen gave a special thank you to Darlene Long for all her extra help and support during those precious few weeks before the test. She also thanked tracklayer Roni Szeliga for her "stinky feet" as well as for all the time and knowledge she so graciously passed along right from the start of Savvy's tracking career. "Both of these women are a great asset to the tracking community and we feel very blessed to be able to work so closely with them," said Gwen Nevin.

Savvy, who is looking forward to her 2nd birthday, is happiest when she gets to put her harness on. So, expect to see this team continue working hard together towards their VST and the coveted CT title!

Another Champion Tracker. . .

CT Skibbereen Autumn Leaves VCD1, CDX, also known as Missy Kailyn, is the 1st Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, the second Terrier and the 85th dog to become a Champion Tracker. The CT title was earned on May 16, 2004 at the Rand Park VST test in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Kailyn has a total of 18 titles, she is an International Therapy Dog, and she was "Sandy" in the play Annie for 6 "perfect performances" (as stated by the cast members). "She is also the love of my life," says owner Judy Shortino.

Lots to smile about. . .

On November 2, 2003 at the Ottawa Field Trial Grounds in Eagle, WI, Moraine member Barb Larsen and her bloodhound Reba earned their TDX. Pictured at top: Judge Beth Walker; owner/handler Barbara Larsen; TDX Dog Rebel's Sound Scentsation (REBA); Judge Stephen Ripley; and tracklayer Darlene Long.

Says owner Barb Larsen (pictured at left with Reba),"Well worth the wait! Not that that's what we did. We worked hard for this. Reba was 7 years old at the time of this test, and we trained for almost all of it."

"Having had 2 hip surgeries as a youngster, we didn't get a good head start at titles and had to lay off for over a year—in her 'prime time'. Then when she got her TD it was in less than 4 minutes. (I'm still catching my breath.) Then, in between—WOW, it seemed like forever."

"I always like to think that she had matured and was just too good for this type of tracking by then. That's why it took her so long and that finally, she just gave in—for me, I'm sure. Reba's always been a big goof. I guess it rubs off. I love my big old smelly dog."

Nose down all the way . . .

Robbie (Maplerun Willo-Aire Robbie) and Moraine member Nancy Foster tracking in March 2003. He was born the summer of 2002 and got his TD in September 2003. "He loves tracking," says owner Nancy Foster.
