(In memory of my older brother, Brian)
We deal with suffering, pain, and strife.
But tears and grief should not be.
He's in heaven, as soon we'll see.
'He followed the scriptures'* as we all know.
Christ in him would daily show.
And his death was not in vain.
'To live is Christ, to die is gain.'**
We shouldn't dwell on those that are dead,
But on the lost, as Jesus said.
* = This was said by his very best friend after he heard the news. It is now enscribed on his grave.
** = This scripture from Philippians 1:21 is the scripture on the back of his letterman's jacket.

Five years it's been since that day,
The void depression won't go away;
The burn of anger has been aflame,
Since that day the British came.
I saw him last leaving for war,
Prepared for the blood, the pain and gore;
We received the news six months later,
He'd been killed by the British, considered a traitor.
It seemed unreal that my father was dead,
But for a worthy cause his blood was shed;
What could mend my broken heart,
Who could play our father's part.
Throughout the years we learned to accept,
Through the days we mourned and wept;
Even though he's long been gone,
Memories of him live on and on.
16th President, we know, was his fate.
He had a short beard,
That looked rather weird,
And black folks he never did hate.
At the end of this one's life,
Five Years Ago
