5 Things God has never seen!
BIBLE READING: JOB 34:21,22
CAPTAIN ALISTAIR VENTER
INTRODUCTION:
On Friday night we went along to the Power Team, and we saw some really strong guys there, who were able to do what people like Piet, Jeffrey, Hugh and myself can’t do! They smashed concrete, ice, blew up hot water bottles, bent horse shoes, rolled up frying pans, lifted really heavy weights, ran through some serious wooden beams – and I guess we saw a real display of power on Friday. But the thing that they did make clear was that God is more powerful – God is able to do more. Many of us think that if we can have some of that external power, if we can wield greater authority amongst our piers, that things will really be great for us. But in the words of God to Paul, when he was seeking help from the Lord because of his thorn in the flesh, his weakness, God said; "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness". In other words, when we are weak, and start to depend on God – He makes us strong!
I am sure that if I had to go around the hall tonight and ask each and every one of you if there have been times when God has been really good to you, there would not be one who could say that He has not been good! Yes, we have had our difficult times, we have been through real rough experiences, but God is good. We have to admit that we serve a MIGHTY GOD!!!!
In the Old Testament when God informed Abraham and Sarah that they were going to have a baby in their old age, God said to Abraham after Sarah had laughed in disbelief: "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" That statement has been echoing through the corridors of time ever since then. Is anything too hard for God? Our text tonight is taken from Job 34:21 which says; "His eyes are on the ways of men, He sees their every step".
Tonight I want to tell you that there are at least 5 things that God cannot see! At least five things that God cannot see! You might think that I am contradicting the Bible now. But you will discover with me that there are 5 things that God cannot see!
Let us look at God a little closer – maybe to try and disprove my statement. Firstly,
This amazing, powerful God whom we serve, is able to be everywhere at the same time! Mothers, how many times have I not heard you saying: "My children expect me to be able to everything at the same time. I am expected to have eyes in the back of my head. I can’t be in 2 places at once!" But God can – in fact, there is no place where he cannot be found. The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 139:7-10 "Is there any place I can go to avoid your spirit? To be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there. If I fly on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, you’d find me in a minute – you’re already there waiting!" There is no place where God is not!
We all know the story of Jonah and the big fish. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh to go and preach the message of repentance to the people there. But instead, Jonah thought he would try and run away from God. So, after buying a ticket, he set off to Tarshish. When he went on board, he went to the bottom of the ship. When you try to go away from God and run away from what you know you should be doing, you go down!!!! Of course, they were’nt too far on their way when there was a terrible storm, the thunder and lightning came, the sea was so rough that it became almost unsailable, and eventually they found old Jonah sleeping in the bottom of the boat. From there he was thrown off the boat, and started heading down to the bottom of the sea. He would have stayed there if God had not made a specially large fish to swollow him and return him to shore again. But even from the bottom of the fishes belly, Jonah found God! God was there! You cannot escape from God! He is everywhere! YET, there are 5 things that God has never seen!
The second thing I want you to notice about God is that:
What does that mean? He means that He is all powerful! When I say that God has all power, I mean ALL POWER! Not some power – ALL POWER. Not a little power – ALL POWER. Not a share of power – ALL POWER! Someone has said that "there is no failure with God!" There can’t be, because he is all powerful!
Listen to what Jeremiah 32:17 says – and we often use these words in one of our worship choruses: "Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. NOTHING IS TOO HARD FOR YOU!
This is the God who said; "Let there be…" and nature came into existence.
This is the God who said: "Let there be…" and the darkness was separated from light.
This is the God who said: "Let there be…" and the stars began to twinkle in the sky.
This is the God who said: "Let there be…" and the moon began to rule by night and the sun by day.
Whenever God has spoken, things have happened. Do we serve a mighty God, or do we serve a mighty God?
God is so powerful that he can walk on water, he can make the blind to see and the deaf to hear. He can raise people from the dead, he can turn water into wine. He has power to straighten a withered hand, he has power to make lame people walk, and leap and run. He has the most incredible power!
Yet, do you know what, there are 5 things that God has never seen!
But I want to remind you of one other thing about God.
These words get more complicated as we go along. Omniscient means he is all knowing! He knows everything! There is nothing that you can hide from him. He knows that you took a fancy for that young blond this week!. He knows that you took a sweet from the pick ‘n mix at clicks the other day. He knows that you cheated in class during the history test. He knows that you went through the traffic light last week when you were in a hurry. He knows how you shouted at that taxi driver! There is nothing that He does not know!
You will remember when Jesus called one of the disciples, Nathanael, he said to him: "Here is a real Israelite, not a false bone in his body". Nathanael said: "Where did you get that idea? You don’t know me?" Jesus answered: "One day, long before Phillip called you here, I saw you sitting under the fig tree." He went on to tell him what he was thinking on that occasion. He said; "You’ve become a believer because I say I saw you one day sitting under the fig tree? You haven’t seen anything yet. Before this is over you’re going to see heaven open and God’s angels descending to the son of man and ascending again!" The commentators tell us that Nathanael had been daydreaming about the vision that Jacob had seen – and Jesus knew it! There is nothing that God does not know! BUT, THERE ARE 5 THINGS THAT GOD HAS NEVER SEEN!
We are talking here about one mighty God, one powerful God, one incredible God, who has no equal.
But what are those 5 things that he has never seen?
We live in a problem filled society, don’t we. Every second person that you meet has got a problem – and often the guys who are bombed out of their minds with drugs or alcohol and tell you that have no problems, man – are the guys that are doing what they do because they could not face their problems. We need to realise that satan has waged war on mankind. He wants to break down individual, families. Someone has said that I the world in which we live, nobody wants to stay in their place. Children want to be grown before their time. Women want to be men. Men want to be women. And some men even want to be God. There are problems on every hand! But the good news tonight is that God has never seen a problem that he cannot solve. The problem is that often we don’t come to Him to help us to solve those problems, or else we find it more convenient to hold on to our problems so that maybe others will feel sorry for us. May I assure you tonight that if you will put your trust in God, He will help you solve your deepest and greatest problems, because he has never seen a problem that He cannot solve.
The third thing that has never seen is this:
In one of my favourite verses taken from Romans 12, we read: "Do not conform yourselves to the standard of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind". I have heard people saying; "Nobody will ever change my mind. Once I have made my decision, I stick by it." It reminds me of Saul who later became known as Paul. Here was a guy who was bent on destroying Christ, Christianity, the church because it was a threat to the Jewish religion. Nothing was going to stop him – he even had the authorities on his side. But on the road to Damascus, God stopped him in his tracks – and what an incredible change of mind Paul experienced.
Someone once said; "I’ve been working on that husband of mine for a long time, and he hasn’t gotten any better yet. But that was her problem. Only God can change the mind of people, and God has never seen a mind that he cannot change.
Fourthly,
The Bible tells us that the heart is the place from where flow all the issues of life. Things are not right with the heart, things will never be good for us. I am so glad that God is still in the business of fixing hearts. Jesus said in John 14:1 "Let not your heart be troubled…" The psamist wrote in Psalm 51:10 "Create in me a clean heart o God, and renew a right spirit within me" Isaiah said that God can take out the stony heart, and give you a heart of flesh". We sing that chorus:
"Change my heart O God, make it ever new
Change my heart O God, may I be like you!"
When God fixes or changes your heart, you are able to love like He said we should, we can treat our fellowmen right, we are willing to forgive, people will recognize a change of character and actions because we have been fixed from the inside out.
It was William Booth who said; "Go for souls and go for the worst" and that is what the early Salvation Army evangelists used to do. David Wilkinson went into the gang area in America, and he went for the toughest soul – and God saved the soul of Nicky Cruz. There is not one person sitting here tonight who can say that God cannot save their souls, that God cannot change them. He has never seen a soul that he cannot save!
CONCLUSION:
We serve a Mighty God – a powerful God – and don’t ever forget that! No problem is too big for Him solve. No illness that he cannot heal. No mind that he cannot change, no heart that He cannot fix, and no soul that He cannot save.
Should you be coming to Him tonight for help?
