They have a deep body. Their dosal and anal fins are very
long. There are a variety of colors of angelfish such as the marbled
variety.
Breeding:
They are open breeders. When the female is ready to lay her
eggs her belly appears inflated. The genital pore is pointed in the male and rounded in
the female. During breeding the temperature should be around 72 F. They lay their eggs
on broad leaves or on the glass wall of the tank. Both parents take care of the eggs,
fanning them. The eggs hatch in about 24-36 hours and the parents carry them in their
mouths to a plant where they are left hanging on the plants. They are later moved to
some shallow, clean holes dug in the sand. In about a week they can swim. The young
can eat powdered foods. It is best to raise the first broods away from the parents.
Through inbreeding, some angelfish have lost their rearing instincts.
