JOE GAY |
Gay works in Kansas City for AT&T (formerly Western Electric) where she has been employed for nearly 30 years, most of this time working in Electronics in various areas. She is planning a retirement in July 1997 and will only be 53 years old ! Still young enough to pursue another career.
In addition to working full-time with AT&T, Gay has her own business-real estate rental properties. She does all the maintenance work on these. Gay was active in Toastmasters, and was Education Vice President. Her hobbies include genealogy, ceramics, crafts, tole painting, and loves to play tennis. The highlight of her Saturday mornings is to go "garage saleing"!
Her involvement with the Wiggin Family history was been tremendous. She has provided Helen with all the data she has gathered and this is included in the 5-Volume Story-Photo Album set Helen is developing. Gay also contacted relatives in New Hampshire and Rhode Island, resulting in a Wiggin family gathering in Sep 1995. Four generations met in New Hampshire at the town that her 10th generation grandfather established in 1633--Stratham, NH.
Gay helped raise two step children, David and Donna Dearing. Later she married Joe Comboy, and helped him raise his three children, Shane, Shad and Daughter Shawn. Shad and Jennifer were married July 16, 1994, but later divorced.
Gay calls herself "lovable Aunt Gay." She and Joe live in Independence, Missouri. For several years one of her favorite pastimes was to go to her lake property and relax in her camp trailer, however with other things taking more of her time, she finally sold this property.
In September 1993, Gay and Joe along with several other family members fixed their daylight basement apartment and moved Mama Lela into it. This worked our great for all of the family, but became an added burden on Gay as Mama Lela's health began to deteriorate after a year with her.
Mama Lela was pleased to be in a house with other people around her, yet had her own home and family treasurers. While it did make a lot of extra work for Gay, and was at times very stressful, they all handled it quite well. And were pleased when other family members came in to help out and gave them a break. Mama Lela lived there for two years until her death in December 1995.
With Gay the leader, the Wiggin family reunions were moved to be closer to Mama Lela so she wouldn't have to travel so far. After the 1994 reunion, Gay's brother George and two brother-in-laws Bob Spears and Eugene Lynch built a new deck at the Comboy's home. It gave them a new upper deck and a car cover off the daylight basement--a great addition to the home. The following year the Wiggin family reunion was held at the Comboy's place in Independence, Mo. The deck was much used for this group of people numbering over 50.
It was quite an adjustment for Gay after Mama Lela died, with that empty apartment and not knowing how to fill it. Wasn't long empty, though. After Chad and Jennifer divorced, he moved back home into the apartment. Gay has a heart of gold and is always ready to provide help and encouragement when any family member needs it.
In 1996 Gay had planned to travel to Alaska to attend the Wiggin family reunion at George's place. However, there was a major family crises and Gay flew to Florida to meet that need. The family had just received news that sister Cynthia was diagnosed with having cervical cancer. Gay spent several weeks there with her family because she was needed.
In 1997, Gay is looking forward to retirement!
