It doesn't matter what religion you were born into, anyone can become a Christian. Christianity is a religion that you choose for yourself. Just being born to Christian parents doesn't make you a Christian and neither does going to a Christian church or being baptized as a baby. Becoming a Christian is something that you must do yourself; it is a choice that is yours to make. A person can only become a Christian by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and Savior. The Bible tells us:
"For God so loved the World that he gave his only son so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16
But what does that mean?
Maybe you have heard that good people go to heaven. But no one can ever be good enough to get into heaven. The Bible states, "For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God." Romans 3:23. That means everyone. We've all sinned. We've all done things that were against God.
So, if you can't do enough good works to get into heaven, then how are you supposed to get there? The Bible says that the way to get to heaven is through accepting Jesus, God's son. Salvation through Jesus is a free gift, we get it by accepting it, we don't do anything to earn it. Jesus took all of our punishment on himself when he died on the cross so that we don't have to be separated from God anymore. If you accept him as your savior, you will not have to be worried about your sins keeping you out of heaven! Jesus has already taken the punishment for you and you will go to heaven when you die! Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord." and Romans 5:8 says that, "But commendeth his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus loved us so much that he died for us.
So how do we accept this free gift? The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto Righteousness and with the mouth, confession is made unto Salvation." To be saved, you must believe that Jesus is the son of God who came to Earth to die on the cross for your sins and that God raised him from the dead. Still not sure? If you'd like to be saved, just pray this simple prayer:
Dear Lord,
I know that I am a sinner and that I can never be good enough to get to heaven on my own. I want to turn from my sin and have Jesus make me into a new person. I know I need Jesus. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and that he was raised from the dead. I want Jesus to come to live in my heart and save me and be my Lord.
Amen
If you just prayed this prayer and you really meant it in your heart, then you are SAVED! You will never have to worry about getting into heaven again. Jesus has taken care of that for you. He has come to live in your heart and make you into a new person. That means you will have His Spirit living in you to help you know the right things to do.
So what now? If you have just been saved, it is important for you to become part of a church so that you can be around other Christians who will help you. The Bible says that you should confess your belief. You can do this in a Southern Baptist Church by making a public profession, usually by coming down to the front of the church during the invitation hymn. (You won't have to do anything embarrassing!) Simply tell the pastor that you have been saved and you'd like to join the church and be baptized. He'll pray with you, take your name and introduce you to the church and that's it! You will be baptized at a later date.
