FRED LEE PLYLER SR. Fred Lee Plyler Sr., the oldest son of Jonas Sanford and Margaret Florence Rogers Plyler, was born 18 April 1892 in Union County, North Carolina. He married Willie Ruth Weddington Kendall, daughter of William Powell and Kendall and Cora Lillian Horne, of Whitestore Township, Anson County, North Carolina on 14 October 1923 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina at the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Plyler was a ver prominent member of the Marshville Community. he was the Marshville City Clerk for 21 years. He was a member of the American Legion, a Mason and a Shriner. Willie Ruth Weddington Kendall was born 25 June 1900. She is the granddaughter of William E. Horne of Anson County. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Marshville. Ruth taught Sunday School at the Marshville Presbyterian Church. She loved flowers and open a florist in Marshville that she ran for about 12 years until her health no log permitted. Fred Lee Sr., his wife Ruth and family attend the Marshville Presbyterian Church. he was an Elder in the church and an outstanding attendant of his Sunday school class for 35 years. He was in the army during World War I, enlisting in 1817. During 1918 he served in France where he was a courier. Fred Jr. had a dog that went to church with the family each Sunday. His name was Blackie and he was almost 17 years old at the time of his death, having been born in April 1936. He wore a dog tag number one and was known by a large number of grown ups as well as children in Marshville. Probably the most unusual habit Blackie had was that of going to church every Sunday regardless of whether the Plylers attended or not. He did this, missing only a very few Sundays, for about eight or nine years before his death. He always waited at the church until the services were over. Ruth and Fred had three children: 1. Infant son. The infant was born at home in Monroe and lived only 3 hours. The infant died of what is term a blue baby. he is buried in the family plot in Marshville City Cemetery. 2. Fred Lee Plyler Jr. was born 3 December 1925 in Monroe, Union County, North Carolina at the Ellen Fitzergerald Hospital. He served 26 months in the Navy during World War II. Upon returning home, he was employed by Duke Power Company. He married Alice Brewer (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Brewer of Fountain Hill) on 30 June 1949 at the Marshville
Presbyterian Church. The ceremony was performed by the rev. Gower Croswell, Jr. Fred Lee Plyler Jr. died on 17 April 1950 at age 24. Employed as a lines man for Duke Power, he had climbed a pole at the R. P. Stegall farm to make a connection to service the Farmers Livestock Exchange. The pole on which he was making a connection to snapped off level with the ground and landed on top of him. He was rushed to a doctors office but was pronounced dead of a broken neck on arrival. He had been employed for Duke Power for two and half years. He was a member of the Floyd Station Post of the American Legion. He graduated from the Marshville High School in the class of 1943 and attended Wingate Junior College. Fred Jr. was very active in local athletics, civic and church work. He was a member of the choir of the Presbyterian Church, a Mason and Shriner. He held the office of Tailtwister in the Marshville Lions Club and was a member of the local fire department. 3. Shirley Ruth Plyler. She was born 20 February 1928 in Waxhaw, Union County, North Carolina. She married James Franklin Tice Sr., son of Forris Franklin Tice and Inez "Dorothy" Lee of Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina. They were married 25 November 1949 at the Marshville Presbyterian Church. Shirley attended Marshville High School. She continued her education first at Wingate Junior College and then transferred to High Point College where she graduated with an education degree. After graduation she taught school in Winston-Salem. She James Tice while attending High Point College where he was also working on an education degree. They have two children James Franklin Tice Jr. and Tammy Lee Tice and two grandchildren: Jessica Lynn Tice and Virginia Lee Tice. Fred Sr. died in Charlotte, North Carolina on 24 November 1966 at Mercy Hospital. He is buried in Marshville City Cemetery. His wife Ruth is buried next to him. Mrs. Plyler had been living with her daughter, Shirley Tice, for several years after she had become unable to take care of herself due to illness. She died in St. Augustine, Florida on the 29 December 1978. She was returned to North Carolina to be with her husband forever. |
