Welsh Sheepdogs?

The caption reads:

A Canine Nursemaid

It is really most remarkable how many things an intelligent dog can learn to do an likes doing them. For instance, the clever Sheepdog
shown above is a valuable assistant to his master, Mr. Tom Jones, a Welsh shepherd. The dog has learned to feed lambs by bottle, and during the lambing season has a thoroughly busy time. note how the dog holds the lamb in position with its paw.

The dog on the left is a "Welsh Collie", while the one on the right is a rescue "border collie" from South Carolina.

This is Laddie, an old fashioned collie from "Wales stock".

Here is another picture of a "border collie" with a similar look.

Apparently the Old Time Farm Shepherds here are not the only all purpose breed in danger of being absorbed into specialty breeds. There is now a movement in Wales to prevent the absorption of the Welsh Collies (a very similar breed to the American English Shepherd) into the Border Collie mainstream. The name and address of the secretary of the organization is:

Mr. Cledwyn Fychan (pronounced Vaughn)
Pen-Arth

More information about the Welsh Sheepdog can be found at the site Herding on the Web.
Photos are available at the English Shepherd site

Border Collie and Sheepdog Rescue located in the UK occasionally has Welsh Sheepdogs. Unlike most rescue organizations in the US, they have a flexible policy on spay and neuter.
