Here are some photos of 2001's summer vacation:
Tawas City, East Tawas and Tawas Bay, (the largest harbor on the Great Lakes),
were named after Ottawa Indian Chief Otawas. He was
known for fishing the waters of Lake Huron.
as a lasting memorial to the lumbermen that
harvested Michigan's giant white pine.
A 14 foot bronze statue overlooks the beautiful Au Sable ("all sand") River.
In the center, the timber cruiser holds a compass,
to his left, a sawyer holds an ax and cross-cut saw.
On the right is the river rat using a peavey.
Etched on the granite base are the names of the contributors
of the $50,000 cost of the memorial.
Sitting at the base of the memorial, is
Cody & Luke, with Ethel between them.

Au Sable river, which is at the bottom of those
over 200 wooden steps.

We were on the Tawas Bay side of Tawas Point,
so the water wasn't as freezing as in the open waters of the lake!!
Built in 1876, it is equipped with
a Frensnel lens built in Paris, France in 1880.
The lighthouse stands 70 feet above Lake Huron
and the walls at the base are 6 feet thick.
Isn't she a beaut?
We chose to go to Iosco County, Michigan for our
vacation this year because I (SushiGal) have roots there.
My father was born in East Tawas in 1922, and I vacationed
there every summer as a child.
My father was a 1940 graduate of East Tawas High School.
Here is a picture of my dad during WWII. He served on the U.S.S. South Dakota.
If you ever get the chance to visit Tawas City & East Tawas,
do so....you won't regret it!!

This photo was taken sometime in the mid 1940's.
She was a Cadet Nurse from Detroit's
Grace Hospital School of Nursing.
My mom was a 1943 graduate of
Mackenzie High School in Detroit, MI.
We went to Alpena, MI, for a family reunion.
We met the Bryza side of my father's family for the
first time in my life. My maternal grandmother, Catherine (Bryza) Sheldon
passed away when my father was very young.
I was very excited to finally meet this side of the family, and
finally see photos of my grandmother.
