SOME NOTES ON ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Every genealogist - amateur or professional - knows that names of counties seem to repeat from state to state. Almost every state has a Lincoln County or a Madison County. Rockbridge is unique in that there is but one.
The county is generally mountainous. Its highest point is Bluff Mountain at about 3200 feet elevation. Besides mountains, Rockbridge also boasts creeks: Buffalo, Hays, Mills, Irish, Litle Mary, Kerr's, Blacks, Whistle, and Woods, are a few. The climate is said to be both temperate and invigorating.
Its most famous landmark is Natural Bridge. According to legend, the Monacan Indians called it "The Bridge of God" and worshipped it. George Washington, while surveying the bridge for Lord Fairfax, scaled 23 feet up and carved his initials in the stone where they are still visible today.
Thomas Jefferson was the first American owner, patenting it with 157 acres on July 5, 1774, "for twenty shillings of good and lawful money."
Millions of years old, Natural Bridge is considered by some to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
