World Champion Triathlete
This picture of Brad and I was taken at the Geelong F1 Triathlon Race in March 1999.
If you hadn't gathered by now.... I love following Sports... well tell me any true Australian who doesn't....... I've started following Triathlon.... and Brad Beven is by far my favourite.......
There have been lots of things said about Brad Beven.... but he is undoubtably Australia's first Legend when it come's to Triathlon..... He is most commonly called "THE CROC"... why you say...... well Brad trains in the Russell River near his Miriwinni home in North Queensland, and there are lots of Crocodiles there too...... With these sorts training partners it is no wonder Brad learned to swim very very fast and has become one of the world’s best triathletes.
Brad "The Croc" Beven is an awesome athlete. He has been competing in triathlons since he was 13.
Brad comes from a small North Queensland town of Miriwinni. If you arrived in Miriwinni and didn't know this..... a drive through the town would soon tell you. There are signs on either side of the town that proudly announce "Home Town of Brad Beven - World Triathlon Champion". There is also a picture of him in the local water hole.... the pub.
Both Brad's father and grandfather have lived in the town since 1933. And his grandfather who is well known as "Nuggett" was a renowned axeman and cyclist in the area.
Brad almost drowned in the Russell River when he was just 2 and a half years of old. He was with his family and they were standing on the railway bridge of the flooded river and suddenly Brad disappeared into the water. Brad's father quickly raced across the bridge and dived into the water and grabbed him.
After this his father made the statement, "He has been saved for a reason, He is going to be someone great." Little did his father know at that stage how great his son would become in his chosen sport.
As for dedication that has never ever been a problem for Brad. Brad used to get out of bed 4:30am for swimming training. His mother says that never once did she have to drag him from his bed. Often though she would find him in the car with his towel around him and having a sleep.
Brad started getting really serious about sport when he was in primary school. He used to compete and win the 800m races. His headmaster commented that he needed to strengthen his arms... so the next thing Brad was running the 4kms to school and was carrying a brick in each hand.... at this time of his life he was only 10 years old.....
Brad has sure come a long way since those times...
Brad's acheivements are just incredible... I've listed them below for you.... He has won four consecutive ITU World Cup Crowns, Five Australian Championships and Five St George Bank Triathlon Grand Prix Titles as well as heaps of other Australian and Overseas Awards..... I was fortunate enough to see Brad compete in the Geelong race of the St George Formula One Grand Prix in Feburary of 1998 and also in March 1999..... And yes... he did win both of those days...
The drive of competition is what spurs Brad on, and on his day he is virtually unbeatable. If there’s a race on you can bet that Brad Beven will be there. And if there is a race to be won - yep - Brad Beven will most likely be the winner.
Brad's training regime every week includes cycling 350kms, running 70kms and swimming 30kms...... boy just thinking about that makes me tired......
Brad's efforts have helped put the sport of triathlon on the world map. His success has greatly lifted the profile of triathlons. This has helped the sport as it moves towards the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Triathlon will be on the agenda for the first time at the Sydney 2000 Olympic's...... unfortunately Brad was badly injured the day before the Selection Trials for the 2000 Sydney Olympic and did hence did not get to participate at the games.
HOT OFF THE PRESS ! ! ! !
Brad Get's 3rd in his First Race in 8 Months.
Brad participated in his first race in 8 months since being badly injured the day before the selection trials for the Sydney Olympic Games in the Formula 1 Triathlon held in Geelong on Sunday 7th January 2001 and came 3rd in that Race. I was lucky enough to see the race and have a brief chat with Brad after the race. He was very surprised with his performance considering he had been diagnosed with an Iron Deficiency in recent weeks. The next race in the Formula 1 Series will be held on the 4th February 2001 in Sydney.
