from the Beaufort Gazette Thursday Sept. 19, 1991 Harmony
Lodge celebrates 245th turniversary Harmony Lodge No.22 A.F.M., on Depot Road
celebrated its 245th aniversary with a
fish fry celebration on Saturday September 14th 1991. The Lodge was constituted by the Grand
Lodge of England Sept.15, 1756 and at that time, was known as Lodge at Beaufort
on Port Royal Island. Albert G. Mackey, a noted Masonic scholar
and historian, has stated the Lodge at Beaufort was active as early as 1751. Various Masonic
activities and ceremonies were reported frequently in newspapers of the day.
The Carolina Gazette reported an
account of the celebration of the Festival of St. John the Evangelist by a new
lodge in Beautort. This lodge was the
third lodge in active existence in South Carolina. The original
warrant issued to the Lodge in Beaufort on Port Royal Island by the United
Grand Lodge of England lists it as "Lodge No.250." The Lodge Hall at the foot of Depot Road is
shared with Beaufort Chapter No. 133. Order of the Eastern Star, and with
Beaufort Assembly No. 13 of the Grand Assembly of South Carolina, Order of the
Rainbow for Girls. A good time was
had by all who came to celebrate this day with us and enjoyed the festive fist
fry. Minutes of March 12, 1992 Brother Secretary, Rt/Wor. Senior Grand
Warden displayed a print of Brother George Washington, from the original
Williams Portrait which hangs in George Washington Masonic National Memorial in
Alexandria, VA. This is the only portrait which Bro. Washington approved as his
likeness. These prints are numbered and were sold for $100.00 as a fund raiser
for Alexandria Washington Lodge No.22 Bro.
Pinkston stated that when he purchased it they had not been numbered and asked
M/W Bro. Don Robey about getting No.22. He s tated that that one went to
Alexandria Washington Lodge No.22, so he asked that this one have the number
122, which M/W Bro. Robey numbered personally. Rt/Wor. Bro Pinkston stated that after he
had the print in a frame he would loan it to the Lodge. Later he placed it in
the same frame that held another print of Bro. Washington, and now hangs on the
south wall to the left of the Junior Wardens station. Minutes of Jan. 14, 1993. This next bit of information may sound a
bit out of the ordinary as to being history of the Lodge at first, but you will
agree that it does as it leads up to a great part in the History of Harmony
Lodge No.22 as well as that of the fourth Masonic District. An Application for Affiliation was reseived
from Brother Emerson Eugene Morris, read and referred to the committee, for
investigation. At the meeting of Feb. 11, 1993, the committee reported favorably
and a ballot was taken on Bro. E. E. Morris. He was duly elected conditionally,
with a request for demit sent to his home Lodge, Centennial Lodge No.221. The
records indicate he became a member of Harmony Lodge as of March 4, 1993 the
date on the Demit. He had received his
M/M degree on May 29, 1953. Under our Code and Constitution, anyone who has
been a member for 40 years or more in entitled to a Life membership. During the
latter months of 1993, Bro. Morris, not in the best of health, had fallen
several times breaking his ribbs. Life memberships are given to our Lodge
members at our Ladies Night Banquet. Rt/Wor. Bor Pinkston and Brother John G.
Harvey made a trip to Bro. Morriss home and presented him with his Life
membership and certificate, as he was unable to attend. During this time Bro. John G. Harvey and
Rt/Wor R. V. Pinkston had been talking
with Brother Morris about something which he wanted to do, as he had no family
and had been in the educational field after getting out of the service. He
related to us that he would like to do something for the youth in the area. He
wanted to set up a Scholarship Fund to assist them in their education after
getting out of high school, and wanted to know if it could be done through the
Masonic Lodge. After giving us a layout of what he had in mind, we went to
work. Rt/Wor. Bro. Pinkston started setting up the program with who and how it
could be handled. He met with, wrote and rewrote this quite a number of times
for 6 months or more, before it met with brother Morris approval. E. E. Morris, Masonic College Assistance

at the request of and in memory of Brother Emerson Eugene Morris, a Life member

Thanks to our departed Brother and benefactor, Emerson Eugene Morris. During the years 1993-1994, Harmony Lodge
had some fund raising for the purpose of getting funds in order to have two
portraits painted of our Deputy Grand Master Robert V. Pinkston. One to be
presented to the Grand Lodge on the date of his instaliation as Grand Master of
Masons in South Carolina, and the other one to hang in the Lodge room. They
also along with the members in the District sold pins and decals, which he had
designed and had made, to help him during his term as Grand Master. On Feb. 17, 1995 Masonry in the Beaufort
area suffered a great Loss in an accident which happened the night before when
nine members were returning home from a York Rite meeting in Hampton ,
resulting in the death of six brothers from Port Royal Lodge 242, three more in
critical condition, one of them from Harmony 22. These three at this time have

WILLIAM D. LONGSHORE ----------- Deputy Grand Master
Proceedings of the --
Lodge System of Masonic Education.
During the latter part of the 18th
century, the Ancient or York Masons made their entry into South Carolina, with
several lodges of the modern or Free Masons going over to them. The Beaufort
lodge was among that number, believing that the Ancients were more authentic,
having derived more closely from the original body in England. The lodge was
then listed as Beaufort No. 41 on the. Register of the Grand Lodge at Ancient
York Masons. In December 1817. a new
charter was obtained bearing the name Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Ma sons of
South Catolina. which has endured to this day. It was at this time that
Beaufort Lodge No.41 became Harmony Lodge No.22, and since then has been listed
as such.
Present officers are John J. Pieratt,
Worshipful Master; Joseph Depew, Senior Warden; Jaime Martinez, Junior Warden;
Fred G. Horton, Treasurer; Robert V. Pinkston Sr., Secretary; Jerry L. Strader,
Senior Deacon; Joel Crane, Junior Deacon; Robert B. Anderson and Steve Prince,
stewards; Laurence Laughlin, Chaplain; and Wronnie Myers, Tiler.
Brother Morris plans to will and
devise his residual estate for the purpose of setting up a Masonic College
Assistance Fund to assist High School & College Students, as set forth in
the criterion.
The "E. E. Morris, Masonic
College Assistance Fund", is to be administered by the secretary of
Harmony Lodge No.22 in order to maintain continuity, with assistance of the
members of the Low Country Masters & Wardens Club, Inc." of the 4th
Masonic District.
The recipients will be selected
by the members of the Low Country Masters & Wardens Club, Inc. per the
criterion. Also the President, Vice President, and the Secretary/Treasurer, of
the Club will audit the account each year.
through-out the fourth
District. This will begin, once everything is in place, with the first
recipients to be selected one year later.
The administrator will be in charge of the funds after the E. E. Morris Masonic
College Assistance Fund is in place. He must be assured that the funds are
invested with an institution which is FDICinsured for amount invested. After
setting up an interest bearing,
checking account, this may involve different banks to be assured that all funds
are secured.
