The Gillespie Family
The Gillespie family was headed by Luke Gillespie who was married to Mary Ann Abbott. Mary was also refereed to as Kate and her last name was sometimes spelled with one or two t's. The Gillespie family came to Canada from England in 1874 according to the 1901 census. Richard was born in England in 1874 and William was born in 1876 in Thedford, Ontario.

Luke Gillespie

On William's birth register Luke is listed as a Musician. On Catherine's birth register Luke is listed as Music Master. On Major's marriage register Luke is listed as a tailor. In 1914 he is listed as living at 23 Willow Av. and being a tailor at 160 Duke. Luke is buried at St. John’s Norway in Toronto, where he and Mary both share the same gravestone.The inscription reads as follows:

Mary Ann Abbott
Born: February 28, 1848?
Died: April 20, 1937
Mary Ann was born in England. On Richard's marriage register to Ada Richards, Mary is listed as Kate.
Richard Luke Gillespie
Born: April 23, 1874
Married: 1. October 28, 1895 2. September 2, 1911 3. Date Unknown
Died: March 15, 1944
Richard was born in London, England in 1874. He had three wives. The first wife, Ada Richards, died September 30, 1907 after giving birth to a still born male child. Richard had three girls with Ada: Gladys Ayleen, Myrtle Adela, and Dorothy Ada. Gladys is listed as being born in Brantford. Myrtle was born in Toronto. On the marriage register Richard is listed as Free Methodist and Ada as Methodist.
Richard got married again in 1911 to Margaret Warnock. Richard was 37 and Margaret was 28 years old when they got married. He was living at 132 Silver Birch Av. and she was living at 511 Pape Av. Richard and Margaret are both listed as Anglican on the wedding certificate. They had two girls: Margaret Lillian and Mona. Margaret died in 1921 of pneumonia and is buried at St. Johns Norway.
After Margaret died, Richard got married for the third time to Ethel Eleanor Channen. They had a daughter Ethel. Ethel Eleanor died in 1981 in her 94th year.
Richard worked as a brushmaker for Taylor, Scott & Co. Later he became a tailor like his father. He had a Shell gas station in West Hill from the early 1930's till his death in 1944. Richard lived behind the gas station. Richard lived in Toronto for most of his adult life. He had polio and wore a brace on one leg. Richard is buried at St. John's Norway in Toronto. He and Ethel share the same gravestone.
William Gillespie

Died: After 1903
William was born in Thedford, Ontario. In 1903 William married Janet Watters. William is listed as a tailor in the marriage register. William was also a brushmaker according to the city directory.
Catherine Gillespie
Born: January 29, 1878
Married: After 1896 Before 1901
Died: After 1937
Catherine was born in Thedford Ontario. Catherine or Kate as she was also known married William E. Norris in year unknown. They had the following children: Hortense P, Charles A. and Kathleen.
Lillian May Gillespie
Born: March 17, 1880
Married: After 1901 Aprox 1903
Died: About 1970?
Lillian was born in Dresden, Ontario?? Lillian married Arthur J. Taber in year Unknown. Lillian died a few days after being hit by a truck near a old age home where she lived. She is buried at St. George's Cemetery. They had a son Russell Taber.
Eugenie Emily Gillespie
Born: June 24, 1882
Married: October 14, 1904
Died: After 1944
Eugenie was born in Brantford. Eugenie married Heu Roland Agassiz, a tailor who worked with Richard Gillespie. They had three girls named Vaudine, Muriel, and Jessie. They also had one boy Alfred. Roland died before 1920 and Eugenie lived with her son Alfred. On the voters list for 1935 Mrs. Roland Agassiz, three daughters, a son, and Miss Lillian Gillespie are listed as living as 136 Silver Birch Av. Eugenie is listed as a witness to William's wedding.
Albert Charles Gillespie

Married: August 29, 1906
Died: After 1937 Before 1939
Charles as he was known was born in Brantford. In 1902 Charles is listed as a presser in the city directory. Charles married Chaissie May McCool in 1906. On the marriage register Charles is listed as a garment worker and as being Presbyterian. Charles is listed as a witness to William's wedding.
Major Gordon Gillespie
Born: March 23, 1887
Married: August 18, 1909
Died: After 1914
Major was born in Brantford 1887. He married Ella May Taylor in 1909. Major is listed as a tailor on the marriage register. His religion is listed as Methodist. In the 1914 city directory of Toronto, Major was listed as a tailor living in a house at 4 Windsor Ave. Major is listed as a witness to Charles wedding.
Emma Margaret Gillespie
Born: July 24, 1890
Married: November 24, 1909
Died: After 1901
Emma married Roland Agassiz's brother, Harold R. G. Agassiz. Her religion is listed as Methodist and her usual residence as Hamilton. She was 19 years old when she was married to Harold who was 26 years old.
INFO Their son Roland Ernest Garnaul Agasizz was a flying officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force who died on June 16, 1943. (More info is on Veterans Affairs Canada site here)
Profession
Most of the family were brushmakers at one time. Luke, Richard, Major were also tailors.
