Ballard 1903-2001 [With -col. pic] Ed Clayton Ballard, 97, St. Joseph, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at a health-care center in St. Joseph. Mr. Ballard had been a sheet metal worker at the Quaker Oats Co. in St. Joseph for 26 years until retiring in 1968. Prior to that, he was a ward attendant at St. Joseph State Hospital and a custodian at Humboldt Elementary School in St. Joseph. Born in Lamar, Mo., on Oct. 4, 1903, he lived in Stanberry, Mo., before moving to St. Joseph in 1936. Mr. Ballard was a graduate of Stanberry High School and served in the Missouri National Guard 128th Field Artillery of Maryville, Mo., of which he played in its band. He was a member of the Savannah Avenue Baptist Church, St. Joseph, where he served as deacon. He was the editor of the Young At Heart tabloid, which is geared toward senior citizens and published monthly by the News-Press. He also served on the Social Welfare Board and Excise Board. On May 19, 1929, he married Doris M. Moore in Troy, Kan. She died in 2000. Mr. Ballard also was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna; a brother, William F.; three sisters, Marguerite Stafford, Lottie Heckenlively and Corliss Cole; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a great-great-grandchild. Surviving: three sons, John, Ashland, Mo., Gary, Bel Air, Md., and Lynn, Greenville, S.C.; three daughters, Barbara Rose, Albuquerque, N.M., Marilyn Drannan, St. Joseph, and Carolee Frakes, Kansas City; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Service: 2 p.m. Saturday, Savannah Avenue Baptist Church, St. Joseph. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. Burial: High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry. Visitation: after 9 a.m. today at the Gladden-Stamey Funeral Home, St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Mr. Ballard, who had served as editor of this publication for five years -- from July 1986 to July 1991 -- died April 18. They were married on that date in 1929 in Wathena, Kan. -------------------------------- The Tri-County News, Friday, June 9, 2000: Doris M. Ballard: Doris M. Ballard, 92, St. Joseph, died May 30, 2000, at a St. Joseph hospital. Born in Stanberry on June 16, 1907, Mrs. Ballard had been a resident of St. Joseph since 1936. She was a former homemaker and a member of the Savannah Avenue Baptist Church in St. Joseph. On May 19, 1929, she married Ed C. Ballard in Troy, KS. He survives at a health care center in St. Joseph. Mrs. Ballard was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Moore and Blanche Moore Stephenson; two brothers, John A. and George A. Moore and two grandchildren. Additional survivors include three sons, John Ballard, Ashland; Gary Ballard, Bel Air, MD. and Lynn Ballard, Greenville, SC.; three daughters, Barbara Rose, Albuquerque, NM.; Marilyn Drannan, St. Joseph and Carolee Frakes, Kansas City; 21 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Funeral services were held June 1 at Gladden-Stamey Funeral Home, St. Joseph, with burial in High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry. Memorials may be sent to her church.
