From the Marshalltown Times-Republican, January 9, 1920 Jabez Ballard Dead Real Pioneer of County Dies at Home In Albion Jabez Ballard, one of the real pioneers of Marshall county died at 6:30 Friday night at his home in Albion of paralysis, following an illness of one week. Mr. Ballard had been in failing health for some time but had been critically ill only a week, having suffered a stroke Thursday of last week. He had been a resident of Marshall county since 1848, coming with his parents, William and Rebekah Ballard from Des Moines county at the age of 2 years. Mr. Ballard's parents were among the very first white residents of this county and made their first home here on what is now known as the Beary farm one mile west of Albion. Mr. Ballard was born in Des Moines county, Sept. 13, 1845. He had been a resident of the county for about seventy-two years. Retiring from the farm, he was employed as a carpenter at Albion. Mr. Ballard was united in marriage at Albion October 18, 1883 with Miss May Wickersham who survives him. Mr. Ballard was the father of eight children, five of whom are living. They are Ethel Ballard of Des Moines, Frank and Earl Ballard of Rupert, Idaho, and Edna and Lyle Ballard at home. Mr. Ballard was the last surviving member of his father's family. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday from the Presbyterian church at Albion. Burial will be in the Albion cemetery.
