From the Algona Upper Des Moines, September 23, 1952. Hatchery Man at West Bend Dies. West Bend - A prominent 48-year-old West Bend business man was buried Monday after he succumbed to a heart attack at his home Friday shortly before midnight. He was Lyle E. Ballard, who was owner of the West Bend Hatchery and city treasurer. Services were held at 2 00 p m in the First Presbyterian church at West Bend. The Rev. D,D, Sampelson of the Methodist church was officiating clergyman. Burial was in the West Bend cemetery. Mr. Ballard had been ill since spring. He was a graduate of Drake university, a Mason and a trustee of his church. Before moving to West Bend in 1938 he worked 16 years for the Standard Oil Co. in Des Moines. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Philip in the air force at Olathe, Kan. and Keith at home; and two sisters, Miss Ethel Ballard of Des Moines and Mrs. Edna Schultz of Conrad. McCullough funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
