Thomas Hurd, 45, of Lawler, died Thursday, February 03, 2005 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Funeral services will be 10 am Monday, February 7, at Holy Family Parish--St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Reverend John Harpel presiding. Lisa Merry will be lector and Eucharistic Ministers will be Bill and Joanne Hurd and Carol Showalter. The family will place the pall and Toms' nieces and nephews will be gift bearers. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, with Tom Huber, Wayne Nystel, Steve Franzen, Leo Dowd, Mike Olson, Dan Brummond, Joe Denner, Dan Johnson and Steve Wegner serving as casketbearers. Honorary bearers will be members of the Chickasaw County Sheriffs Department and of the New Hampton Police Department. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Sunday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4 pm Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 7 pm scripture service. Further visitation will be an hour before services at the church. Thomas James Hurd was born March 10, 1959 in New Hampton, the son of James and Alice Marie (Showalter) Hurd. He was a 1977 graduate of New Hampton High School. Tom served as dispatcher for the Sheriffs Department for 22 years before retiring in January of 2001 for health reasons. He loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile and enjoyed cooking and grilling out. He was also an avid fan of the Vikings and Chicago Cubs and enjoyed many sporting activities. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Chickasaw Sno-riders. Tom is survived by his mother and step father Alice Marie and Neil Jones of New Hampton; 3 sisters Peg (Mark) Mueterthies of Lawler, Jeanne (Joe) Rieks of Iowa Falls and Debbie (Rod) Gossling of Alta Vista; his maternal grandmother Bernice Showalter of Elma. Also surviving are his 8 nieces and nephews: Megan, Michael and Matthew Mueterthies; David and Katy Rieks and Alyssa, James and Riley Gossling. He was preceded in death by his father James Hurd; maternal grandfather Harold Showalter and paternal grandparents Thomas and Lillian Hurd.
