She died near Vail, Iowa, Thursday, March 20, 1997 at the age of sixty-seven. Mary was born near Westside, Iowa and received her education at Jackson Township No. 7 rural school and St. Ann's High School in Vail, Iowa. After completing her education she helped her family at home and caring for her mother. In 1958, Mary began her employment at the Crawford County Court House in the auto department of the Crawford County Treasurer's Office, working there until retiring in 1991. She enjoyed golfing, the challenge of cross word puzzles and was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed volunteer work at St. Rose, helping others in need and was always willing to help with the taxi service. Mary was a very charming and unselfish person who always had kind things to say of others. Her personal grace and personality were so outstanding that her many friends admired her. Mary was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Barbara. Survivors include three brothers, Fenton Lawler and his wife, Betty of Westside; Donald Lawler of Omaha; William C. Lawler and his wife, Jean of Carroll, and many nieces and nephews. She died near Vail, Iowa Thursday, March 20, 1997 at the age of sixty-seven. Maxine was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison where she also received her first communion. She began her formal education at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and graduated from the Denison Community high School with the class of 1948. As a junior in high school, she was employed part time at the Crawford County Auditors' Office beginning her distinguished career in county government. After completing her education, Maxine continued serving her regional government at the Audiors' office. In 1980 she was elected to the post of Crawford County Auditor and reelected in 1984. Her notable career in county government united nearly fifty years of faithful, devoted and conscientious service to the people of Crawford County. Maxine was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Ladies Altar Society and a charter member of the Crawford County Board of Health. She enjoyed helping anyone in need of assistance and various other activities, and especially enjoyed caring for her father. She took all personal and official responsibilities with seriousness and dedication. In her leisure time Maxine enjoyed golfing, walking, studying genealogy, traveling, gardening and working in her yard. Additionally, Maxine continued her education by enrolling in various adult education classes in the region. She was preceded in death by her parents, augnts, uncles and two nephews. Survivors include two sisters, Marjorie Knott and her husband, Jim of Carroll, Iowa; Kathleen Mason and her husband, Robert of Lakewood, Colorado; two brothers, James Walde and his wife, Billie of Northglenn, Colorado; John Walde and his wife, Leslie of Winfield, Illinois; three aunts: Hattie Wulf of Denison; Rose Lawson, of Denison; and Irene Smith and her husband, Howard of Carroll; fifteen nieces and nephews and eleven great-nieces and nephews.
