RITES HELD HERE FOR MRS. E. SHOWALTER Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Showalter, mother of 13 children and a longtime resident of the Elma community, were held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic church here Thursday morning, Dec. 20, at 9:00 o'clock. Mrs. Showalter had passed away about 5:00 o'clock the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 17, at the Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids where she had made her home for the past seven and on-half years. Her death was caused by the complications incident to her advanced age of 84 years. A son of the deceased, Rev. Father Norbert Showalter of Reilly Ridge, was celebrant of the solemn requiem high mass, assisted by Rev. Ronald Axen, a former Elma priest as deacon, Rev. Wm. Clark of Ames as sub-deacon, and Rev. P. C. Bodensteiner of Elma as master of ceremonies. The local pastor, Rev. Edmund O'Donnell, delivered the sermon. Most Rev. H. P. Rohlman, archbishop of Dubuque, was present in the sanctuary, as were Rev. Lawrence Klassen and Very Rev. Emmett Kelly of New Hampton, Rev. James Delay of Lawler, Very Rev. John Smith of Charles City and Rev. Shekleton of Dubuque, formerly of Lawler. Following services at the local church, interment was made in Calvary cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were George Gansen, Ed Freidhof, Art Gansen, John Beecher, Edward Clark and Frank Riley. Elizabeth Farrell was born Aug. 3, 1867, at Villanova in Clinton county, the daughter of John and Catherine Farrell. Her early years were spent in the Villanova community. Sixty-five years ago she was united in marriage to John Showalter. They farmed in Clinton county until 1911 when they moved to Howard county and continued to farm on various places in the Elma community until 1935 when the Showalter family moved to Elma. Mr. Showalter died May 27, 1944. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Showalter continued to live in Elma until June of 1945 when she left to make her home in Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, where her death occurred. Mr. and Mrs. Showalter were the parents of 13 children. A son, George, died in infancy, with the following 12 children mourning the death of their mother: Mrs. Al Hanrahan (Mae) of Independence, Joe of Elma, Frank of Cedar Rapids, Cyril of Independence, Leo of St. Paul, Minn., Edwin of Delano Minn., Earl of Rock Island, Ill., Sister Mary Madonna, Cedar Rapids, Albert of Los Angeles, Calif., Harold of Elma, Linus of Dyersville and Rev. Norbert Showalter, Reilly Ridge. Besides the children, Mrs. Showalter is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Will Torpey (Gertrude) of De Witt, and Mrs. Theresa Shannon of Sigourney. Besides her parents, husband and one son, Mrs. Showalter was preceded in death by three brothers, Pat, James, and George Farrell, one half-brother, John Farrell, Two half-sisters, Martha and Maria, and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Shannon and Mrs. Frank Showalter. All of the children, with the exception of Mrs. Hanrahan were able to be present for their mother's funeral. Other relatives from away who attended the services were: Gene Farrell, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Urban Farrell, Mason City; Aloysius (Tad) Farrell and Harry McCleman of Delmar; Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connell, Cedar Falls; James Blinkman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dyer of Ames; Mrs. George Marr, Dan Showalter of Waterloo; Mrs. and Mrs. Everett Showalter, Rock Falls; and Dale Showalter, Plymouth. Burial will be in the Elma cemetery. Mrs. Showalter was born Elizabeth Farrell, August 3, 1867 at Villa Nova and married John Showalter on February 8, 1888. He died in 1944. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Mae Hanrahan of Independence, and Sister Mary Madonna of Cedar Rapids; and ten sons, Joseph, Harold, and the Rev. Norbert Showalter, all of Elma; Frank of Cedar Rapids; Leo of Minneapolis; Cyril of Waterloo; Edwin of Montana; Earl of Davenport; Linus of Dyersville and Albert of Los Angeles; also two sisters, Mrs. Teresa Shannon of Sigourney and Mrs. Gertrude Torpey of DeWitt.
