FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR JOHN SHOWALTER Passed Away Saturday, May 27, at the Age of 78 Years; Lived here since 1910 Requiem High Mass was offered at the Immaculate Conception church on Memorial day, May 30, for John G. Showalter, who passed away Saturday evening, May 27,1944,at the University hospital, Iowa City, after a brief sickness. At the time of his death he was 78 years, 8 months and 6 days of age. The mass was offered by a son of the deceased, Father Norbert F. Showalter, chaplain, U.S. navy. Present in the sanctuary were Fathers Edmund O'Donnell and Ronald Axen of Elma, and Father J.F. Wiehl, of Alta Vista. An unusually inspirational sermon was delivered by Father O'Donnell, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church. Father O'Donnell stressed the importance of the vocation of marriage and fatherhood which was so admirably fulfilled by the deceased. Serving the mass were three grandsons, Bobby, Jerry and Jimmie Showalter, and Jerry Sullivan. Internment was made in Calvary cemetery with Conway's in charge of all arrangements. Pallbearers were Jim Connolly, Nick Gansen, Ed Friedhoff Frank Riley, Ed Clark, and John Beecher. John Gordon Showalter was born in Latrobe, Westmoreland County,Pa., on Sept. 21,1865, the son of Elihu T. and Alice Gordon Showalter. While still an infant he moved with his parents to Clinton couny, Iowa, where they established the Showalter homestead at Villanova, near DeWitt. He was educated in the Clinton county schools and grew to manhood on the farm. He was married Feb. 8,1888, in St. Patrick's church at Villanova to Elizabeth Farrell by the late Father J.J. Garland. To this union thirteen children were born. The family moved to Elma in 1911 and have been residents of this community ever since. Surviving the deceased is his critically sick wife and twelve of their children: Mary Ann Hanrahan, Joseph, Francis, Leo, Cyril, Edwin, Earl, Sister Mary Madonna, Albert, Harold, Linus and Father Norbert. Also surviving are thirty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One son, George, died in infancy. Mercy, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kelly, Mrs. Wayne Hoopman, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barnes, Cresco; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erger, of McIntyre; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hughes, Riceville; Mrs. Emmett McGrane, Alta Vista, and Mrs. C.G.
