Eva M. Torpey, 91, of DeWitt died Aug. 26 at Ridgewood Care Center, Racine, Wis. the funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. H. Robert Harness officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Nelson Funeral Home, DeWitt, where a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service will be conducted. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Delmar. Pallbearers will be Jeff, Joe and James McCloskey, Alan Dean, Scott Scarbrough, Robert Beuthin and Joe Brewster. She was born Nov. 24, 1905, in Delmar, to Richard and Mary Helen Brinkman Powers. She married Roger Torpey, Sept. 27, 1934 in Delmar. He died in 1976. She had taught school for 10 years with the Delmar and Lost Nation schools. Sha also assisted her husband with farming for 42 years in the Delmar and Charlotte area. She also had been employed with the DeWitt Community Hospital as a Certified Nuirsing Assistant. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and its altar and rosary society. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carmel (Don) McCloskey of Racine; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Helen (Wilmer) Lary of Delmar; and two brothers, John Powers of Rock Island, Ill., and Raymond Powers of Delmar. She was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister and two brothers. She was born Nov. 24, 1905, in Sugar Creek, to Richard and Marie Powers. She married Roger Torpey Sept. 27, 1934. He died July 16, 1976. She taught school in the Delmar area and was a nurses aide at DeWitt Community Hospital for 22 years. They farmed in the Charlotte area and moved to DeWitt in 1973. She was active in church at Assumption in Charlotte, (when living on farm), and is now active with st. Joseph's in DeWitt after moving to DeWitt.
