Conway, USN (Ret.), of Newport, RI, and formerly of Chicago, IL, died on Friday, 21 November 2003. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955, Jim served the Navy for 30 years. His initial tour was aboard JOSEPH P. KENNEDY (DD-850). In 1957, he applied for submarine duty and attended Submarine School. He then served on the submarines BUGARA (SS-331) and BAYA (AGSS-318) in San Diego, CA. In 1963 he earned a master’s degree in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate School. He returned to sea onboard VOLADOR (SS-590) and ROCK (AGSS-274). Next, he served on the ComSubDevGru Two staff. He assumed command of DOGFISH (SS-350) in 1970. Following sea duty, he was assigned to the Pentagon in OP-96. His next duty was as an exchange officer in the Royal Navy Submarine Attack Squadron at Faslane, Scotland. He attended the Naval War College and then returned, with the rank of captain, to the Pentagon as Head of Strategic Analysis in OP-60. In 1980, he assumed command of AJAX (AR-6). Jim concluded his Navy career at the Naval War College as an instructor and as the dean of academics. After retiring from the Navy in 1985, he led the Newport, RI, office of Sonalyst, Inc. and then went on to manage the office of SIR, Inc. In pursuit of a lifelong dream, Jim returned to school to complete his teaching credentials and taught math and physics for several years. In addition to his family and work life, Jim was active in the community in Newport, RI, including service as president of the Newport Chapter of the USNA Alumni Association. Jim is survived by his wife, Anita (Walter) Conway; their four children, Kenneth, Stephen, Jean, and Camille; and six grandchildren. JAMES McNARNEY CONWAY, 71, of Ayrault Street, Newport, Rhode island, the former Dean of Academics at the Naval War College, died Friday, November 21st at Newport Hospital. Mr. Conway was a 1955 graduate of the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., and had served as an officer for 30 years before retiring in 1985. He was a graduate of Submarine School in 1957, served on various submarines before earning his Master's degree in operations research, and then assumed command of the USS Dogfish (SS-350) in 1970. Mr. Conway later worked at the Pentagon, and as an exchange officer in the Royal Navy Submarine Attack Squadron.
