David & Fanny Harkness Gilchrist typed by Lyman Morrison, 1995 Another Pioneer Gone Uncle David Gilchrist passed into the last long sleep last Monday afternoon at three o'clock. He had wonderful vitality and up to the last year or two was quite active in getting around. Uncle David was a typical Scotchman, strong in his beliefs and fearless in defending them. He was universally respected. David Gilchrist was born in Scotland on March 18, 1830. He grew to manhood and was married to Fanny Harkness. To this union were born six children, four daughters and two sons, one son died in infancy. In 1857 they emigrated to New York, but in the spring of 1866 they came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Keokuk county. Here they labored and endured the hardships of pioneer life. In September of 1905 he lost by death his beloved wife, and in June of 1906 he came to North English where after a brief illness he died December 31st at 3 p.m., at the ripe old age of 76 years, 8 months and 13 days. In early manhood he confessed Christ as his Saviour and united with the Independent Church of Scotland but soon after coming to Iowa in 1866 he united with the Christian church and was a faithful to his duty and to the work of the Master as he saw it to the day of his death. He was an Elder in the church of his choice for many years. He leaves to mourn his death four daughters, three of whom live in or near North English, and one in Illinois, and a son in Kansas, besides a wide circle of relatives and friends. The funeral services were held in the Christian Church on January 1, 1907, at 2 p.m., conducted by the pastor, J. C. Hanna, assisted by Rev. D. P. Miller, after which the body was laid to rest beside that of his wife in the North English Cemetery. Aunt Fanny Gilchrist Fanny Harkness was born in Halfmorton, Scotland, November 30, 1827. She was married to David Gilchrist December 24, 1849. To this union were born six children, one dying in infancy--the remaining five with her aged companion are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. She died September 27, 1905, aged 77 years, 9 months and 27 days. She died as she had lived--a Christian. She united with the Church of Christ at North English in the spring of 1868, being baptized by Rev. J. L. Williams. Funeral service was held in th Christian church September 28, conducted by L. F. Davis assisted by Elder Miller.
