Jane F. Gilchrist Jane F. Gilchrist was born in Scotland on June 11th, 1855, came with her parents to this country and settled in New York state in 1858, but in 1867 they came next and settled in Keokuk county, Iowa. Here she grew up to young womanhood and was united in marriage to J. Q. Mahannah on October 26th, 1872 . To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters, the daughters dying in infancy, but all the sons growing to manhood. In 1867, soon after coming to Iowa, she gave her heart to God and united with the Christian Church and during all these years she never ceased to love the Saviour she confessed. On May 21st, near the home of her son J. H. Mahannah, she was stricken with heart failure, and died before they could get her into the house, aged 52 years, 11 months and 10 days. She leaves to mourn her death besides the sorrowing husband and three sons, three sisters and one brother, two sisters living here and one sister in Nebraska and the brother in Kansas, and three grandchildren and large circle of relatives and friends. She was a faithful, loving wife and mother, a trusted and tried friend and a Christian. She rests from her labors and her works do follow her. The funeral services were held in the Christian Church on May 22nd, at 2 p.m., conducted by her pastor, J. C. Hanna, assisted by Rev. D. P. Miller. After brief services the body was laid to rest in the North English cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
