John Gilchrist The following item is taken from the Lexington, Kentucky, newspaper. Mr. Gilchrist was an uncle of Joe Gilchrist of this place, John P. Gilchrist of Osceola and William Gilchrist of Indiana. He was a brother of their mother. John Gilchrist, 76, for 30 years a letter carrier for the Lexington post office, and one of the four original carriers of the local office, died at his residence at 120 Bassett Avenue at 12:15 o'clock Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. Mr. Gilchrist for 20 years served as a rural carrier and prior to that was in the city department. He was widely known and well liked. Born June 22, 1856, in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, the son of the late John and Elizabeth Graham Gilchrist, Mr. Gilchrist came to this country at the age of 9. He had been a resident of Fayette county since his arrival in America. Mr. Gilchrist was a member of the Second Presbyterian church for 60 years. He was a member of Covenant Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Maccabees. Mr. Gilchrist is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Ballard Gilchrist, two daughters, Mrs. Charles M. Marshall, Lexington, and Mrs. Charles F. Erd, Bellevue; and two sons, J. Edward Gilchrist, Lexington, and G. Alex Gilchrist, New Albany, Indiana; one sister, Mrs. C. H. Johnson, Lexington; two brothers, George F. Gilchrist, Foster, and D. Henry Gilchrist, Lexington; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were at the Second Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at 2;30 o'clock, and burial in the family lot in Lexington cemetery.
