Deaths: Mahannah North English---Word has been received here of the death of J. H. Mahannah, former local businessman, at Artesia, Cal. Death was due to pneumonia. Son of John Q. and Jane Mahannah, he was born in North English. He was married to Rilla Mason in 1898. He was in business here for several years before moving to California. Mr. Mahannah is survived by his wife; a son, Dr. L. L. Mahannah of Long Beach, California, two grandchildren, Patsy and Bob; and a brother, Walter of Chicago. The body was brought to North English and the funeral services were held Tuesday at the Christian church with the Rev. Harold A. Reel in charge. She was born at North English May 28th, 1880, a daughter of Jesse and Amanda Lindsey Mason. She attended North English school and was married in October of 1897 to J. H. Mahannah, who died in 1941. The couple lived in North English until 1924 and then lived in Utah for sometime and have lived in Long Beach since 1934. She was a member of the Christian Church and the Eastern Star. Survivors are a son, Dr. L. D. Mahannah of Long Beach, two grandchildren, Robert and Patricia and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Dow Mason of North English; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. B Fred Woolsey officiating. Soloist Mrs. A. C. Schoenthaler with Mrs. Rose King at the organ. Journal Tribune, Williamsburg 2 Jan 1964 Mrs. J.H. (Joe) Mahannah. -------------- North English ---George L. Mahannah died at his home here Sunday Aug.26 after a lingering illness. Mr Mahannah has been a prominent business man in North English for many years, mainly in the restaurant business. George, the son of J. L. and Jane Mahannah, was born July 28, 1883, in North English. He was married to Pauline Rogner, Jan. 31, 1906. To this union were born four children. Mrs. Mahannah died October 1, 1918. On September 15, 1928 Mr. Mahannah married Hilda Hendrickson. Surviving are his wife, four children, Melvin of Chicago, Mildred of Conrad, Paul of Ottumwa and Lorna of Cedar Rapids, and one grandchild, Shirley Jean. He is also survived by two brothers, J.H. of Long Beach, Calif., and Walter of Chicago. Funeral services were held Tuesday Aug. 28th at the Christian church conducted by the Rev. J. H. Krenmyre of Montequma assisted by the Rev. R. W. Hudson. Interment was in the North English cemetery. Pioneer Republican 6 Sept 1934 Marengo, Iowa -------------- North English Business Woman Died Saturday North English --- Hilda H. Mahannah, former well known business women here, died early Saturday morning at Des Moines. Born in Sweden the daughter of Lars and Elna Hendrikson, she came to the United States with her parents, when she was four years old. On Sept 5, 1927 she was married to George L. Mahannah in the Little Brown church at Nashua. For many years the Mahannahs ran a cafe here and after the death of her husband in 1934, Mrs. Mahannah continued operation of the cafe. In later years she bought and ran a hotel which she sold eight years age. For the last three years she made her home in Des Moines so she could be near her step-daughter, Mildred Mahannah , in Des Moines. Mrs. Mahannah was a member of the North English Rebekah lodge and Christian church. Survivors, in addition to Mildred, include a step-daughter, Lorna Vermazen of Fayette; two step-sons, Paul of Keokuk, and Melvin of Berea, O.; two sisters, Alice Hjerleid of Winona, Minn., and Mrs. Joseph McCarthey of Eyota, Minn. Funeral services for Mrs. Hilda H. Mahannah were Sunday, May 15, 1960 at the Powell. Funeral home. Officiating clergyman was Rev. Lynn Rumer. The organist was Mrs. Merle Smith. Casket bearers were Charles Pine, Donald Swink, Donald Coffman, Floyd Brown, Lowell Churchill and Barney Thomas. Interment was in North English cemetery Pioneer Republican 5-19-60 Marengo, Iowa -------------- Dr. Mahannah Died In California The Keith Masons recently received word that their cousin, Dr. L.D. "Duke" Mahannah, 88, died April 21, 1987 at his home in Long Beach, Calif. Funeral services were April 24. Dr. Mahannah was born in North English and was graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine. He served in the Navy Reserve in World War l, practiced medicine in Utah and moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1931. An obstetrician and gynecologist, he practiced in Long Beach 34 years until he retired in 1965. He was affiliated with St. Mary Medical Center. He was an active member of the Virginia Country Club, a 32nd Degree Mason at the Mason Triumph lodge 479, a member of the Los Angeles County, California and the American Medical associations. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Maidie C. Mahannah; one daughter, Patricia Jo Nestell; one son, Dr. Bob Mahannah; six granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren. Newspaper Iowa City 14 May 1987 -------------- M. Mahannah Dies Of Heart Attack Mildred F. Mahannah, 72, died of a heart attack Sunday, Nov. 11, 1979 at Iowa Methodist Medical center, Des Moines. A native of North English, Mildred had resided at 3333 Grand avenue, Des Moines for many years. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the First Christian church, Des Moines, with the Rev. James Ryan, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial was made in the North English cemetery, at 2 p.m. Miss Mahannah was born Oct. 5,1907, at North English, a daughter of George and Pauline Rogner Mahannah. Her father operated a harness shop, and later a restaurant here for many years. She attended North English schools and graduated from North English high school in 1924. She attended Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls, earning a primary education diploma. She started her teaching career in North English, teaching second grade. She later taught in Conrad and Stuart, before moving to Des Moines in 1939. Miss Mahannah was employed by Meredith Corporation as a comptroller for many years, retiring just a few years ago. She was an active member of the First Christian church and was a past president of the Christian Women's Fellowship. Survivors include a sister, Lorna Vermazen, Fayette; eight nieces and nephews, other relatives and a large circle of friends, including many former students. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Melvin and Paul Mahannah, and by her step-mother, Hilda Mahannah. North English Record 22 Nov. 1979 -------------- Paul Mahannah, 54, Died at Keokuk; Buried Here Paul Mahannah, 54, of 620 N. 7th St. Keokuk, Iowa, died at St. Joseph hospital, Keokuk, at 5:10 Saturday afternoon, June 6, 1964, after a serious illness of several months. The son of the late George L. and Pauline Rogner Mahannah was born January 15, 1910 at North English, Iowa. He was graduated from high school here in 1927. He was married to Jean M. Brown on November 26, 1930, at Iowa City. They resided in Ottumwa before moving to Keokuk 21 years ago. Mr. Mahannah was associated with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and the Rupley Electric Company in Keokuk prior to his employment at the Tigue Motors, Inc, where he was general manager and secretary-treasurer at the time of his death. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist church, a live-time member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the Lodge No. 106 of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Keokuk Lions club. He was an avid sports fan. Surviving are his wife, Jean Mahannah, a son, David Paul Mahannah at home, two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Shirley) Haas of Denver University at Denver, Colorado and Mrs. Richard (Judy) Worster of Keokuk; two sisters, Miss Mildred Mahannah of Des Moines and Mrs. Ernest Vermazen of Fayette, Iowa; one brother, Melvin Mahannah of Berea, Ohio, and a granddaughter, Wendy Sue Worster, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Trinity Methodist church in Keokuk, the Rev. Wesley W. Steinmetz officiating. Burial was made in the North English cemetery. Graveside rites here were at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. North English Record 11 June 1964 -------------- Melvin Mahannah Melvin Mahannah, 68, a native of North English, died Sunday evening, November 2, 1975, in Berea, Ohio, where he had resided for over 20 years. He had been ill for the past eight months, a victim of lung cancer, and he had also suffered a stroke last March 8th while vacationing in Florida. His death occurred at the Southwest General Hospital in Berea. Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thurs., Nov. 6) in Berea, with burial in a cemetery in that city. In Berea to attend the services are Melvin's twin sister, Mildred Mahannah of Des Moines, and youngest sister, Lorna Mahannah Vermazen and husband, Ernest, of Fayette. Melvin was born in North English in October, 1907, a son of George L. and Pauline Rogner White. He attended school here, and graduated in the class of 1927. He later worked for a finance company and worked some in the Mahannah restaurant here, owned and operated by his father. After service in World War II Melvin married and moved to Ohio, where he has been employed. He and his wife, Josephine, recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Besides his business affairs, Melvin has been very active in civic affairs and organizations in Berea, where his help and guidance will be missed. He is survived by his wife, Josephine,: a son, Barry, of Berea: a daughter, Barbara Jo Foster and a 3 months old grandson of Medina, Ohio. He was preceded in death be his parents, and a brother Paul, who died in 1964.
