Mrs. A. F. Scott Mary Jane Gilchrist, daughter of Peter and Mary Gilchrist, of Dumfrieshire, Scotland, was born in Scotland, April 19, 1857. She came with her father to America and to North English in 1870. She was married to Avesta Franklin Scott, in Keokuk county, Iowa, December 15, 1878. She died at North English, Iowa, January 20, 1919, aged 62 years, 9 months and 1 day. She was the last of a family of nine children, five boys and four girls. The oldest son and first child Lancie Guthro Scott, died June 1 st, 1892, at the age of twelve years. Two daughters, Mrs. Ona Bertha Coxe, and Mrs. Ida Louise Williams, and one son, David Avesta Scott, live in North English and are present today. The other son, Albert Alvin Scott is with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. She leaves besides her husband and children eleven grandchildren. The funeral was held from the house Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dan Miller. Interment in North English Cemetery. Scott, another long time resident of this community was buried here today, Mrs. Scott was born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, April 19, 1857. Her parents were Peter and Mary Gilchrist. One son Albert Alvin is with the American forces in France, the other, David with the two sisters, Mrs. Ida Williams, and Mrs. Ona Coxe, is located at North English. There area also 11 grandchildren. This is the fourth death in the family of Mr. Scott within recent months. Little more than a year ago his mother died in Des Moines. Last fall during the flu epidemic here one of the victims was his son-in-law, J. R. Coxe. Early in the present month a daughter, Mrs. Etta Morrison also fell victim of the flu and passed away. The funeral services today at 2 p.m., at the family residence were in charge of Rev. Dan P. Miller. Interment in North English cemetery. The North English Record No date
