Angela Crowningshield Dies At Mitchell Hospital Friends of Mrs. Angela Crowningshield, former resident, will be interested to learn of her death at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mitchell last week. She was the mother of Bernard Crowningshield who grew up here and was a football coach and High School Teacher in Miller School. Mrs. Crowningshield was brought here for burial in St. Ann's Cemetery. Accompanying the body were Bernard and Mrs. Crowningshield's sister, Mrs. Anna Samuels of Mitchell. Her husband preceded her in death. A daughter, Mrs. Donald Tucker of Miller, also survives her. The Miller (SD) Press September 6, 1951 ------------------- Called by Death John Lawler died at his home in this city, Saturday morning, September 19th. He had been sick only a few days. The deceased was one of the early settlers of Buffalo and Hand counties. He was 79 years old and was born in Ireland. He is survived by his three daughters --- Mrs. John Cummings, of this city; Mrs. C. O. Crowningshield and Mrs. John Samuels , both of Mitchell, and two brothers. Funeral services were held Monday forenoon at the Catholic church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery. ------------------- John Lawler, Pioneer Resident, and Mrs. Amelia Comstock Pass Away John Lawler, a pioneer resident of this county, passed away Friday night at his home in this city, after an illness of only a few days duration. Mr. Lawler's general health was poor and he fell an easy victim to the ravages of pneumonia. The deceased was born in Queen's Co., Ireland, seventy nine years ago and emigrated to the United States when nine years old. Thirty-four years ago this fall he came to Hand County to make his home. Previous to that time he lived on a farm in Kentucky, Iowa, and also in Buffalo county. For a number of years, Mr. Lawler was a familiar figure on the streets of Miller. He lived alone in a small house a block east of main street. He was very fond of music and many times could be heard playing old songs on his violin. Funeral services were held Monday morning from St. Anne's church, interment being made in the Catholic cemetery. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. John Cummings of this city, Mrs. A. She came to Buffalo Co. with her parents in 1884, later moving from their claim to Miller. In 1894 she married John J. Cummings, they have 3 sons, Hugh, John, & Arthur, all of Chicago, & Husband of Miller, survive. Also a step-daughter and 2 sisters. March 20, 1941. [month is unreadable on my copy]. -------------------------- Death Summons Pioneer Woman Services Friday for Mrs. John Cummings, Resident of City 55 Years A stroke suffered Sunday morning proved fatal to Mrs. John Cummings, and she passed away early Tuesday morning at her home in south Miller. Funeral services will be held Friday morning from St. Anns Catholic church. Pall bearers will be J. M. Giever, D. C. Walsh, E. M. Donlin, Nick Peresic, Val Zeller and Jewell Campbell. Born Mary Ellen Lawler near Waterloo, Ia., May 13, 1875, the deceased came to South Dakota with her parents in 1884. For a time the family lived on a claim ni Buffalo county, later moving to Miller. In 1894 she was united in marriage to John J. Cummings. To this union were born three sons, Hugh, John and Arthur. Handicapped for some years by failing eye-sight, Mrs. Cummings yet retained a cheerful outlook. She was a kindly, Christian woman, quiet and unassuming, yet possessed of a charitable and friendly nature. Surviving are her husband, her three sons, all of Chicago, a step=daughter, Mrs. J. E. Cechman of Mitchell; and two sisters, Mrs. A. Crowningshield of Mitchell and Mrs. John Samuels of Plankington. Out-of-town relatives for the funeral are the three sons; Mrs. D. E. Tucker of Minneapolis, Mrs. Angie Crowningshield of Mitchell; Bud Crowningshield of Worthington, Minn.; Mrs. Samuels of Plankington and Mrs. Lyle Swanson of Highmore. Miller Press, March 20, 1941. ----------------------------- J. J. Cummings Dies Monday At Age Of 98 Funeral services for John J. Cummings, 98, Luverne were held yesterday morning at St. Catherine's Catholic church, Rev. M. L. Doyle officiating. Mr. Cummings died at the Luverne hospital last Monday morning. He had been in ill health for the past few years. Burial was in St. Ann's cemetery at Miller, South Dakota. John Joseph Cummings was born December 22, 1855 at Shullsburg, Wisconsin. He was married there the Catherine Chasmer who passed away in 1892. He moved to Miller, So. Dak., in 1888 where he lived until 1940, when his second wife the former Mary Ellen Lawler, passed away. Since that time he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. J. E. Cechman in Luverne. He was preceded in death by three sons, Frank, Hugh, and John. He is survived by one son, Arthur, Chicago, and daughter, Mrs. J. E. Cechman, Luverne. He also leaves nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. May 17, 1970 p. 33. ----------------------------- Last Rites Are Held Here For J. E. Cechman Funeral services were held for James Edward Cechman, 73, Tuesday in the Smith Funeral Home, the Rev. Mr. Charles Bissey, Denver, Colo., officiating. Mr. Cechman died early Saturday in the Community Hospital after having been in ill health since early this year. Burial was in Mapleton Cemetery, Luverne. Born June 30, 1884, in Sanborn, Iowa, Mr. Cechman came to Rock county as a boy of nine and attended school here in his early years. He married Eta Kathryn Cummings May 23, 1925, at Rapid City, S.D. They moved to Luverne permanently in 1944 after having lived in Chamberlain, S.D., and Mitchell, S.D. They had no children. Mrs. Cechman survives him. Mr. Cechman was a retired Milwaukee railroad passenger train brakeman. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Two sisters and a brother preceded him in death. Pallbearers were Art Salzman, John Hildebrandt, Ole Lund, Burdell Rowe, Leo Snook, and Otto Beelman. Rock County Star Herald Luverne, MN 15 Aug 1954 Page 4 Iowa Visitor Dies Suddenly in City C. O. Crowningshield of Des Moines, Iowa, an insurance agent, died suddenly yesterday while calling on Ernest Schlitgus, official of the Rochester Odd Fellows lodge, in his office. He was 55 years old. Mr. Crowningshield, whose wife disclosed at Des Moines that he had suffered from heart trouble, died soon after seating himself in Mr. Schlitgus' office in the Odd Fellows building. Mr. Schlitgus summoned medical aid, and Oscar Hargesheimer, deputy Olmstead county coroner, also was called. Mr. Crowningshield was a general insurance agent, a representative of the American Benevolent association, an insurance organization, and a member of the Mitchell, S.D. Odd Fellows lodge.
