John Samuels Obituary Short funeral services were held from the Anderson Funeral Home in Plankinton Saturday afternoon and services at the Mt. Vernon M. E. Church followed, with Rev. Walker officiating. Pallbearers were Albert Griffin, harry Knox, Ray Jacobson, Henry Brammer, Verne Prangley and Walter Christiansen. Burial was made in Mt. Vernon cemetery. Mr. Samuels was an old time pioneer of this community, a large land owner and the past several years has been ill more or less and was numbered among the successful men of the community. John Samuels, son of John and Sara Samuels was born at NewBridge-on-Wye, Wales, July 19, 1866 and died at his home N. E. of Plankinton, So. Dak. May 28, 1942 at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 9 days. He came to America with his parents and sisters Sara and Mary in the year of 1869, settling in Illinois. In 1883 he moved to Mount Vernon, where he engaged in blacksmithing and farming until 1900. On January 8, 1917 he was married to Miss Anna M. Lawlor. In the year of 1925 ye retired to the farm where he spent the remaining years of his life. Mr. Samuels believed in God. He was a skillful mechanic, a good farmer, thrifty and progressive. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anne Samuels and six sisters, Mary Gary, Mitchell, S.D., Elizabeth Samuels Sioux City, Ia., Ellen Egan, Chicago, Ill., Minnie Taubman, Mitchell, S.D., Jessie Haynes, Mt. Vernon, S.D. and Adelaide Vilas, Pierre, S.D. One sister Sara Betts preceeded him in death. Besides these he leaves other relatives and many friends.
