Maxine Gail Swanson Fisher Highmore, South Dakota, USA Brick Section G - Row 11 Maxine Gail Swanson Fisher was born in Highmore, South Dakota on September 4, 1923. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachlor of science in nursing in 1946. She married Ernest F. Fisher in 1947 and spent the next 21 years rearing 5 children. In 1959 Maxine and Ernie moved their family to a farm near Zearing, Iowa where Maxine became active in community affairs. She was the first woman elected to the Zearing Board of Education in 1968. In that year, Maxine also went back to work as a public health nurse in Story County. In 1969 Maxine took a position as a school nurse in Marshalltown, Iowa where she influenced the lives of thousands of young Iowans. While holding down her full time job, she also received her masters degree in counselor education from Iowa State University at the age of 56. Maxine chose this particular area for her masters degree because she had found that counseling was a very important part of her work with children. She continued to work as a school nurse until 1989. After she retired from school nursing, Maxine worked part time at the colonial Manor Nursing Home in Zearing Iowa until she was 70.
