" Services held Monday for Leo Downey Requiem mass was held for Leo Downey, 86, of Wall Lake, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church here Monday morning, Jan. 25, at 10:30 a.m. Father James Shanahan officiated at the rites. Interment was in the parish cemetery, under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Service of Wall lake, where the Legion of Mary recited rosary at 3 p.m. and the parish rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday. Honorary pallbearers were his grandsons, Peter Downey, William Downey, Michael Downey, Edward Downey, Thomas Dunn and Daniel Dunn. Active pallbearers were Dick Reiter, John P. Lawler, William Lawler, Melvin malloy, Clarence Rowan and Francis Foley. Mr. Downey passed away at St. Anthony's Hospital Friday morning, Jan. 22, following a two week illness. He was born at Vail, Iowa January 24, 1884, the son of Edward Downey and Mary Reagan Downey, in northeast Crawford County. He attended Denison Normal College, and later homesteaded a farm in Oklahoma. He returned to Iowa, and on August 17, 1920, was united in marriage to Agnes Maher of Arcadia. They were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this past summer. They were the parents of four children, Joseph of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Joseph (Marguerite) Dunn of Breda; John of Des Moines; and Thomas, who preceded him in death in 1960. He also has 17 grandchildren, all of whom survive. A sister, Mrs. Bernice Phillips of Carroll also survives. Preceding him in death, in addition to his son Thomas, were five sisters, Ethel, Gertrude, Genevieve, Rachel and Isabel and a brother Jess, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Downey farmed south of Wall Lake for many years, retiring to town in 1957. Mrs. Downey will continue to live in Wall Lake. Wall Lake newspaper ------------------- Tom Downey Dies At Rochester Sunday; Funeral Wednesday The Wall Lake community was saddened this week by word of the death of Tom Downey, 29, at 7 p. m. Sunday Feb. 21, at St. Mary's hospital, Rochester, Minn. He had been ill with cancer a little more than two months. During that time, he was hospitalized at Carroll for ten days and transferred Jan. 17 to the Rochester hospital. Services were at 9 a. m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's church, with the Rev. James Shanahan officiating. Attendants were Gilbert Renze, Edwin Reiter, Harry McCutcheon, John LeStrange, Charles Bundt and Eugene Boeckman. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery. Thomas Downey was born to Leo and Agnes Maher Downey Dec. 19, 1930 in Crawford county, Iowa. He attended schools here, graduating from Wall Lake high school in 1948, and then operated the home farm. His marriage to Mary Kay Pagel took place Dec. 19, 1959, at St. Louis, Mo. He also leaves besides his parents, two brothers Joseph of St. Louis and John of Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Marguarite) Dunn of Breda and other relatives. Interested in music, he was a member of the Elks chorus of Carroll and participated in local groups both as a vocalist and pianist. He was also active in the Sac county rural young people's organization and the alumni association of Wall Lake high school. Wall Lake (Iowa) Blade 25 Feb 1960 Joseph Leo Downey, Greenville Joseph Leo Downey, 83, of 1306 Pelham Road, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Wall Lake, Iowa, he was the son of the late Leo and Lillian Lawler Downey. He was a graduate of Iowa State University and was retired from General Electric Corporation where he was a member of the GE ELFUN Society. Mr. Downey was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Taylors, and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 9184. Surviving are his wife, Mary Kelly Downey; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Frank O'Sullivan of Greenville; sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Diana Downey of Rochester Hills, Mich., and William and Jeanne Downey of Des Peres, Mo.; a sister, Marguerite Dunn of Carroll, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
