Life Story of --- Joseph Lawler Westside --- Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., Sept 2, at St. Ann's church in Vail for Joseph Patrick Lawler of Westside. Mr. Lawler, born July 14, 1887, at Westside, lived his entire life in the Westside community. He was the son of Catherine Farrell Lawler and Finton Lawler. On June 25, 1924, he entered into marriage to Charlotte Hamill at St. Joseph's church in Carroll. To this union three sons and two daughters were born, William, Fenton, and Mary Frances at home and a son, Donald lives in Omaha with his wife, Mary Holland. One daughter died in infancy. Mr. Lawler leaves his widow, four children, one granddaughter, Barbara Lawler of Omaha, and one brother, George Lawler, of Westside. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two brothers, William and Frank, and two sisters, Gertrude O'Connell and Lillian Downey. Mr. Lawler received his education in the schools of Westside and Denison. He was also a member of the St. Ann's church in Vail. He spent his life as a farmer in the Westside community and also a horse buyer. Death came at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at St. Joseph's hospital in Omaha. He enjoyed good health until five weeks ago, when he became ill quite suddenly. Cancer attributed to his death. The solemn high mass was officiated by Rev. R. L. Clark, celebrant, by Rev. Thomas D. Holland, Deacon; Rev. Mr. Lloyd White, Subdeacon. Burial was made in St. Ann's cemetery at Vail. Pallbearers were Vincent Lawler, Edwin Malloy, R. E. Walsh, Melvin Foley, Melvin White and Francis Devaney. Denison Bulletin Sept. 17, 1957 ---------------- Deaths, Funerals Mrs. Joseph Lawler Mrs. Joseph (Charlotte) Lawler, 73, of Carroll, formerly of Westside, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at St. Anthony Nursing Home, where she had resided since 1966. Requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Harold Cooper at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Ann's Church at Vail; interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 7 p.m. Wednesday. there will be recitations of the rosary Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Thursday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. by the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Ann's parish. Mrs. Lawler was borh Oct. 10, 1897, at Carroll, a daughter of Robert and Frances Hamill. She spent her early years here and married Mr. Lawler at St. Joseph's Church in Carroll on June 25, 1924, with the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Stephen Butler officiating. The couple made their home 5 1/2 miles north of Westside. Mr. Lawler died Aug. 31, 1957, and in 1958 Mrs. Lawler moved to Westside. She moved later to Denison and lived there until coming to Carroll in 1966. Survivors include four children, William and Fenton of Westside, Donald of Omaha and Mary of Denison; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Reynolds of Carroll and Mrs. A. Joseph Kelly of Richland. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter and three brothers, Carl, Walter and Paul Hamill. Mrs. Lawler was a member of St. Ann's Church, Vail, and of Court St. Rose of Lima No.6, Catholic Daughters of America, at Carroll. Farmer Dies October 4th ---------- Well Known Farmer Passes Away at Hospital In Omaha After An Illness of Short Duration ---------- Had Contracted Pneumonia ---------- Deceased born in Jackson Township April 22, 1883 --- Leaves Wife and Many Relatives ---------- Wm. Lawler, prominent and successful farmer of Jackson township, passed away at a hospital in Omaha Thursday, October 4th , after an illness of short duration. Some two weeks ago Mr. Lawler went to Omaha to have his tonsils removed and while there contracted pneumonia which caused his death. The news of the death of Mr. Lawler came as a great shock to his many friends in Jackson township. The deceased was born April 22, 1883, in Jackson township where he grew to young manhood and received his education in the rural schools of that township. On Jan. 22, 1918, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine G. Sullivan, of Vail. In 1920, they moved to their farm in Jackson township. He leaves to mourn his untimely death his devoted wife, his mother, Mrs. Kate Lawler, two brothers, Geo. and Joe Lawler of West Side, and one sister, Mrs. M. E. O'Connell, of Vail. His father, one brother, Frank, and sister, Lillian, preceded him in death. In the death of Mr. Lawler, Jackson township has lost one of its best citizens, and one whose loss is keenly felt by everyone. He was prominent in all of the affairs of his community and his style, integrity and pleasing personality won him many friends. The funeral services which were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at Vail, were largely attended by old friends and neighbors. Services were conducted by Rev. Father Sullivan, after which interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Vail Denison Bulletin October 10, 1923 ------------------- William C. Lawler CARROLL William C. Lawler, 81, of Carroll died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail with the Rev. John Thomas presiding and the Revs. Lloyd White and Richard Remmes concelebrating. Lectors will be Erin Harpenau and Monica Nees. Gift bearers will be Mr. Lawlers three children. Servers will be Katelynn Venner and Rob Lawler. Casket bearers will be Jason Harpenau, Danny Harpenau, Keith Venner, Joe Nees, Rick Hertzig and Oran Kohorst. Honorary casket bearers will be Cory Venner, Madison Lawler and Garrett Lawler. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery at Vail. Visitation starts at 2:30 and the Carroll Knights of Columbus will lead a rosary at 3 Tuesday afternoon at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 Tuesday night at the nursing home. Visitation will resume at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A son of Joseph and Charlotte (Hamill) Lawler, he was born June 29, 1925, at Westside, attended Jackson Township No. 7 rural school, graduated from St. Ann High School at Vail in 1943 and spent his lifetime on the family farm north of Westside. He and Jean Kohorst were married Feb. 12, 1958, at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia with the Rev. Cletus Ahmann officiating. The Lawlers farmed until 1996 then moved to Carroll. Mr. Lawler was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll, longtime member and usher at St. Ann Parish in Vail and member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed music and dancing. Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Carroll; three children: Beverly Harpenau and husband Mike of Remsen, Carol Venner and husband Ken of Arcadia and Bill Lawler and wife Mandy of Carroll; eight grandchildren: Jason, Erin and Danny Harpenau, Keith, Katelynn and Cory Venner, and Madison and Garrett Lawler; a brother, Fenton Lawler, and his wife, Betty, of Westside; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Nola Kohorst of Arcadia and Mae and Earl Schechinger of Austin, Minn. Mr. Lawler was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Don Lawler; two sisters: Mary Frances Lawler and Barbara Lawler in infancy; his parents-in-law, Joe and Mary Kohorst; a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Lawler; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Kohorst.
