Funeral services were today at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail with burial in the St. Ann Catholic Cemetery in Vail. The Huebner Funeral Home in Westside was in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Westside; one son, Michael of Omaha; two daughter: Mary Ellen Whiteing and Rita Ann Lawler, both of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Walsh of Vail; and one brother, Robert of Omaha. ************************************** Denison Review, Friday, July 26, 2002, page 7: Francis Lawler was born March 3, 1914, the son of George and Ethel Downey Lawler. He died at St. Anthony's Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, Sunday, July 14, 2002 at the age of eighty-eight. Francis was born on a farm near Westside. He received his education at St. Ann's Catholic High School in Vail, graduation with the class of 1931. After completing his education he remained in the area to farm until he joined the US Army. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Westside. On June 26, 1944, Francis was united in marriage to Ellen Fitzpatrick. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of three children. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Westside Community Club, former member of St. Ann's Church Council and a former director of the Westside State Savings Bank. Francis was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gerry and Charles as an infant. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Westside, one son, Michael and his wife, Suzie; two daughters, Mary Ellen Whiteing and her husband, Leonard and Rita Ann Lawler all of Omaha; ten grandchildren, and three great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Walsh and one brother Robert and his wife, Theresa Lawler; nine nephews, two nieces and one sister-in-law, Marian Fitzpatrick. Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. Fr. Patrick Walsh and Fr. Lloyd W. White served as Celebrants of the Mass and interment held at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Vail, Iowa. Organist Irene Fielmeier provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Katei Farrell as she sang "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", "My Wild Irish Rose" , and "Irish Blessing", and for St. Ann's Family Choir as they sang "On Eagles Wings", "Prayer of St. Francis", and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as readers were Dan Lawler and Sarah Lawler. Those serving as petitioners were Lynn Whiteing Gaston and Lisa Whiteing. Those serving as gift bearers were: Jennifer (Whiteing) Mieras, Jessica Mieras, Kelby Mieras, and Meghan Mieras. Those serving as pallbearers were: Stephen Whiteing, Patrick Lawler, Paul Lawler, Thomas Lawler, David Lawler, and Dan Lawler. Military honors were performed by the American Legion Post No. 65 and Post No. 196. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Altar Society. Carroll Daily Times Herald Nov. 16, 2005 Ellen Lawler WESTSIDE Funeral service for Ellen Lawler of Westside was held this morning, Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail. Mrs. Lawler, 91, died Monday, Nov. 14, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. The Revs. John Thomas, Lloyd White, Patrick Walsh and Richard Whiteing concelebrated the service. Lectors were Sarah Lawler and Stephen Whiteing. Servers were Jake and Nick Fitzsimmons. Gift bearers were Len Whiteing and Suzie Lawler. Petitioners were Lynn Whiteing Gaston, Lisa Whiteing Coonfare and Jennifer Whiteing Mieras. Casket bearers were Stephen Whiteing, Thomas Whiteing, Patrick Lawler, Daniel Lawler, David Lawler and Paul Lawler. American Legion Auxiliary Post 196 of Westside had an honor guard. A daughter of Thomas and Nellie (Quirk) Fitzpatrick, she was born Sept. 27, 1914, at Denison and was educated in a rural school and at Denison High School, graduating in 1931. She worked as a teller at the First National Bank in Denison until her marriage to Francis Lawler on June 26, 1944. The couple had three children. Mrs. Lawler remained at home for 18 years then went to work at the Vail branch of Westside State Bank. During her tenure, the bank was destroyed by fire and later robbed, and she was locked in the bank vault as the robbers fled. Mrs. Lawler was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Ladies Guild and American Legion Auxiliary and a past member of the Fortnightly Club. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, china painting, golfing, crocheting and reading. She also loved traveling, seeing new places and learning new things, and she was an accomplished violinist. Survivors include a son, Michael Lawler, and his wife, Suzie; two daughters: Mary Ellen Whiteing and her husband, Leonard, of Omaha, Neb., and Rita Lawler of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Marian Fitzpatrick, of Denison; a brother-in-law, Robert Lawler, of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.
