JOHN G. LAWLER John G. Lawler died Tuesday, October 22, 1996, at his residence near Westside, Iowa, at the age of 77. John was born on October 13, 1919, at Westside, the son of James H. and Margaret (Handley) Lawler. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1942 until August 1943, during World War II. John married Catherine Lally on February 7, 1944, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. The couple made their home on the family farm north of Westside. John taught violin lessons for many years to numerous students in the area. He was a member of St. Ann Parish, Parish Choir, and member of the Parish Finance Board. He was also a member of the Vail American Legion, Denison Knights of Columbus, and Luke E. Hart Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of Defiance. John was a 4-H Leader for 28 years, and was a member of the Iowa Chapter of the Flying Farmers of America, and a member of the American Angus Association. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; his children, James (Kathy) Lawler, Ed (Katie) Lawler, Mary (Gary) Jones, Tom (Jan) Lawler, Dorothy (Myron) Olerich, Kevin (Cindy) Lawler, Christine (Mark) Poland, and Jeff (Nancy) Lawler; 27 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice (Lyman) Benton; 2 aunts; 1 uncle; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Blanche Lawler, in infancy. In loving memory of John G. Mass of the Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail with the Rev. Lloyd White and John Thomas concelebrating. Lectors will be Jackie Lawler, Melinda Jones and Craig Olerich. Gift bearers will be Alyssa Lawler, Brennna Lawler, and Katelyn Poland. Servers will be Rob and Mike Lawler. A daughter of John and Margaret (Houlihan) Lally, she was born Jan. 26, 1924, at Vail. She graduated from St. Ann High School at Vail in 1941, spent most of her life in the Vail and Westside communities. She and John G. Lawler were married Feb. 7, 1944, at St. Ann Church with the Rev. Denis Clark officiating. They farmed the family farm north of Westside. Mrs. Lawler was a homemaker. Following her husband's death in October 1996 she moved to Carroll. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll and former member of St. Ann Parish, choir and altar society. She was also a member of the Vail American Legion Auxiliary and the Legion of Mary. She enjoyed growing raspberries and making raspberry jelly, playing cards and doing word-find puzzles. [a very similar paragraph to the above one listing survivors. Lawler Monday Morning In a beautiful ceremony at Saint Ann's church in Vail at 8:30 o'clock Monday, February 7, Catherine Anne Lally and John Gerald Lawler were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. Rev. D. L. Clark celebrated the nuptial high mass which was sung by Robert Dieter and Louis Malloy. .. The bride, the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lally, was charming in a white slipper satin gown, made princess style, with long, full sleeves and a train that was prettily carried by her little cousin, Joan Marie Egan, dressed in a floor length pink organdy gown with a sweet pea corsage. ... The bridegroom, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Lawler, wore a suit of blue and had for his groomsmen Mr. Joseph White and Mr. Lawrence Handley, while Robert and William Lawler acted as ushers. A reception and three course dinner was held at the Lally home for the bridal party and their immediate families. ... These young people need no introduction to our reeders. Bother were born here and have lived in this community all their lives receiving their education at St. Ann's Academy and graduating from that institution.
