CRAWFORD MEN IN WRECK ----------------- Two Jackson Township Men Meet Sudden Death. ----------------- Stock Train Has Rear End Collision on Illinois Central in Illinois, Resulting Fatality ----------------- Two Jackson township men, Michael C. Lawler, and H. P. Pfankuch, met sudden death last Monday morning while sleeping soundly in a caboose of an Illinois Central stock train running through Illinois, at the town of Apple River, a short distance east of Dubuque. D. Lawler, a brother of Mike, was also badly hurt, and T. F. Jordan and J. J. Morehead of Dunlap were seriously injured at the same time. It seems that the special stock train on which the men were riding behind their stock was stopped at the bottom of a hill at this station to get water, and it was while standing there that another train rushed down upon it. The trainmen on the stock train saw the danger in time to jump off, but the stockmen being asleep did not know of the danger till the awful crash came which launched them into eternity. Altogether four men were killed and six injured in the wreck. Dan Lawler was injured about the breast and legs, but will recover; Mr. Jordan was injured about the back and hips and Mr. Morehead was more seriously injured, his wife and child being sent for on Tuesday. The railway company took every possible measure for the relief of the men, sending special trains to carry their wives to them, and having surgeons at hand at once. Two sons of Mr. Pfankuch, who were attending Denison college, were also sent for and went to West Side and then onto their home Monday night. Both Mr. Lawler and Mr. Pfankuch were well-to-do farmers and stock raisers of Jackson township and are highly regarded in the community. The funeral of Mr. Lawler occurred yesterday at Vail with a large number witnessed the obsequies. He was a man just past middle age and leaves a wife and ten children at home to support and comfort. We have not learned about the funeral of Mr. Pfankuch.
