P. J. Lawler Passed From This Life Jan. 4 Patrick James Lawler was born near Lexington, Kentucky, June 16, 1850, the son of John and Mary Lawler and one of a family of nine, all of which preceeded him in death except one sister, Mrs. Alicia Kealy of Hastings, Neb. In 1851 he came with his parents to Clinton county living on a farm near Villa Nova. In 1872 he came by covered wagon to Crawford county, settling on a farm north of West Side in which vicinity he has since resided. In 1888 he sold out the farm and went in the business of moving and carpentering. He was the inventor of the corn husker during the year of 1890 of which he never got credit for. The machines not being manufactured until his patent rights had run out. He was one of the oldest office holders in the state, having held the office of assessor for the term of fifty years. For the last twenty years or more he has made his home with his sister, Mrs. Margaret Dunn, and his niece and nephew Josephine and Clare Dunn. Mrs. Margaret Dunn preceeded him in death on Jan. 16, 1931. Mr. Lawler's health began to fail about the year 1922, being affected with rheumatism and heart trouble so badly that he had to give up his trade as Carpenter and house mover. His niece, Miss Joseph Dunn, and nephews, Clare and Leo, did all that loving hands could do for him up to the time of his death on Jan. 4th, 1932. The funeral was held in Vail on Thursday, Jan. 7, Rev. Rather Lynott officiating at a Requiem High Mass after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in St. Ann's cemetery beside his brothers and sister, who preceeded him in death. The pall bearers were his six nephews: Joseph, Will, and Daniel Lawler, Joseph Kealy, Leo Dunn and Joseph Cuddy. Thos left to mourn his loss are one sister, Mrs. Alicia Kealy of Hastings, Nebr., Josephine and Clare and Leo Dunn of Breda; his nieces and nephews of this vicinity and around Hastings, Nebr., besides a very large circle of friends and acquaintances. Those attending the funeral from a distance were his sister, Mrs. Alicia Kealy of Hastings, Neb., her son Joe and daughter, Mrs. Phil Vreeland and grandson John Goodwin; Daniel Murphy and daughters, Mrs. W. K. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Maher and Mr. and Mrs. John Downey, all of Carroll; Mrs. Peter Lawler, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Will Corrigan, Mrs. Tom Brogan all of Wall Lake.
