Ralph Barry Thursday, March 4, 1999 Former Hastings resident Ralph Barry, 80, of Pendleton, S.C., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at his home. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pendleton with the Rev. Thomas D. Timlin officiating. Burial will be in Missionary Baptist Cemetery at Meadows of Dan in Virginia. Sullivan-King Mortuary of Anderson, S.C., is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Barry was born June 14, 1918, to Thomas Jennings and Lillian Mable (Pontzius) Barry in Blair. He moved with his family to Hastings at an early age. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School. On Aug. 27, 1941, he married Ruth Ann Vreeland in Hastings. He served the U.S. Navy from 1937, until retiring in 1960. He served aboard the USS Saratoga and USS Franklin serving in World War II and the Korean War. He received a Bronze Star. He was a retired engineer with Hercules Powder Plant. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors are his wife; two sons, Ralph Brian of Zephurhills, Fla., and Dixon Joseph of Anderson; one daughter, Martha Ann Niedjela of Stuart, Va.; one brother, William M. "Bill" Barry of Hastings; one sister, Arline Merrill of Lakewood, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Philip Thomas; two brothers and two sisters.
