Al Determan Al Determan, 72, of DeWitt, died Thursday. Visitation will be at the Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The parish vigil service is at 6 p.m. Sunday. Funeral liturgy is at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roger Haatvedt, Chuck Hunter, Duane Spain, Dick McDermott, Don McMain, Dick Schrader, Don Johnson, Orville Rittmer, George Brown, Vince Angerer, Bobby Tracy and Ron Storjohann. He was born Feb. 15, 1933, to Ed and Lottie Determan. He married Donna Spain on June 1, 1957, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Delmar. He graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1952 until 1956 during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He started working in construction shortly after he was discharged from the Navy. He worked for various contractors in and around the Quad-City area operating cranes. He retired in 1996. He also farmed for many years in rural DeWitt. He was a lifetime member of Operating Engineers Local 537, Rock Island, Ill., later Local 150 of Chicago. He also was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, for 42 years and the American Legion for nearly 50 years. Survivors include his wife; Jess (Kay) Determan of DeWitt and Curt (Lisa) Determan of LeClaire; two grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Dorothy (Lyle) Goettsch of DeWitt, Mrs. Camilla (Don) Sarevelli of North Carolina, Mrs. Mary Jo (Claire) Droessler and Mrs. Lorraine (Frank) Reither of Colorado and Janet Driscoll of California; and two brothers, Jim Determan of Goose Lake and Richard (Mary) Determan of Tucson, Ariz. Alfred Delano Determan was born to Ed and Lottie Determan, February 15, 1933. He graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1950. Al enlisted in the United States Navy from 1952 until 1956 during the Korean Conflict and received an Honorable Discharge. He married Donna Spain at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Delmar, June 1, 1957. He started working construction shortly after his service discharge. He worked for various contractors in and around the Quad City area operating cranes. He eventually became known as one of the best crane operators in the area and retired in 1996. Al was a lifetime member of the Operating Engineers Local 537 of Rock Island, Illinois, later becoming Local 150 of Chicago. He received his gold watch at a dinner in Chicago in 2004 following 50 years of service. In addition to his career in construction, Al and Donna spent many years farming at Rural DeWitt. His hobbies were horseback riding (trailrides) and later motorcycles. He loved Harley Davidson bikes and especially the two different Heritage Softails he owned. Al and Donna took many trips on the motorcycle locally as well as to Daytona Beach, Florida and Tucson, Arizona. When health problems were evident, the Harley was replaced by an RV with trips to NASCAR races and other parts of the United States. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, for the last 42 years and was a member of the American Legion Post for nearly 50 years. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna; sons, Jess Determan and his wife, Kay, DeWitt and Curt Determan and Lisa, LeClaire, Iowa; granddaughter, Courtney Determan and Todd, Chillicothe, Illinois; grandson, Cole Determan, DeWitt; sisters, Dorothy (Lyle) Goettsch, DeWitt, Camilla (Don) Sarevelli, North Carolina, Mary Jo (Claire) Droessler, and Lorraine (Frank) Reither, Colorado, Janet Driscoll, California; brothers, Jim Determan, Goose Lake, and Richard (Mary) Determan, Tucson, Arizona.
