F.R. Lawlor, Pioneer Merchant, Dies at 73 Fenton Reed Lawlor, a pioneer west side merchant, died yesterday after a long illness at his home, 240 South Scoville avenue, Oak Park. He was 73 years old and came to Chicago in 1858. A few years later he founded a dry goods house at Madison and Peoria streets. In 1893 he founded the Lawlor Dry Goods company at Oakley boulevard and Madison street, of which he remained the active head until his retirement in 1919. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. William J. King, and a son, Edwin D. Lawlor. Lawlor, aged 81, of 240 South Scoville, Oak Park resident for 20 yuears, died Monday morning, February 27, in her home. She had been ailing for the last three years but was not seriously ill until three weeks ago. She suffered a broken hip five weeks ago when she fell in her room. She was the wife of the late Fenton R. Lawlor, mother of Mrs. W. J. King, also of the Scoville avenue address, and Edwin D. Lawlor of 166 North Ridgeland. Mrs. Lawlor had four grandchildren. there are two sisters also surviving, who live in Ottawa, Ill. Solumn requim high mass was celebrated Wednesday morning in St. Edmund church; interment was in Mt. Carmel. --------------------- Genevieve (nee Lawlor) Kerns, 76, of Wilmette died May 1, 2000 at Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie. Mrs Kerns had lived in Wilmette since 1960. She was an avid tennis and bridge player. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence A. Kerns; son Lawrence (Elizabeth) Kerns of Barrington, Christopher (Shawn) Kerns of Glenview and Michael (Maryruth) Kerns of Evanston; daughters Mary (Michael) McIntyre of Northfield and Elisabeth (Peter) Cormier of Glenview; and sixteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edwin Lawlor Jr., and her sister, Elizabeth Sullivan. A funeral Mass was celebrated May 4 at Sts. Faith, Hope and Charity Church, Winnetka. She was a longtime resident of Northfield. Mrs. Sullivan attended Pine Manor School and Manhattanville College. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Evanston Hospital, and a member of St. Philip the Apostle Church in Northfield. She is survived by her husband, Dudley R. Mr. Lawlor, 92, was active until his death in his Chicago law firm of Lawlor and Kerns. He had been a lawyer for 68 years. He was graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1907 and becan his career in Chicago in 1908. After 50 years of practice he was named senior counselor in the Illinois Bar Assn. Mr. Lawlor served as attorney for 68 years of the Cook County Truck Gardeners and Farmers Assn. He was the founder of the Northern Illinois Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. in Arlington Heights. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Sullivan of Glenview and Genevieve Kerns of Wilmette; a son, Edwin D. Jr. of Barrington; and 16 grandchildren. He was very active in the Kiwanis Club, both at the local and district levels, serving as president of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Club and as lieutenant governor. Kerns, 88, of Wilmette died Sunday, Feb. 20 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Mr. Kerns was born July 23, 1916 in Serena, Ill. and was the second of six children. He graduated from Serena High School in 1934 and earned his degree in economics from the University of Illinois where he was the president of his fraternity. He began law school at Georgetown University, going to school at night and working for the War Department during the day. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army and began training in the Counter Intelligence Corps. He completed his training and was sent on an eight-month mission to Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He earned the rank of captain and was sent to Normandy on June 6, 1944 in the 83rd Infantry Division, the "Thundering Herd." He graduated law school at DePaul University in 1947 and worked in the trust department at Harris Bank. On Oct. 18, 1947, he married Genevieve Lawlor of Chicago. He served an additional one and one-half years in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War. In 1952, the Kerns returned to Chicago where he established his law practice. In 1961 they built their home in Wilmette where they raised their children. Mr. Kerns was recognized by both the Illinois State and Chicago bar associations for having practiced law for more than 50 years. He served on the Board of Catholic Charities for more than 20 years and was also chairman and a member of the Board of Trustees at Mount Prospect State Bank from 1968 to 1974. Survivors include three sons, Lawrence (Elizabeth) of Barrington, Christopher (Shawn) of Glencoe, and Michael (Maryruth) Evanston; two daughters, Mary (Michael) McIntyre of Northfield, and Elisabeth (Peter) Cormier of Glenview; 16 grandchildren, Andrew, Caroline, Gillian, Peter, Michaela, Caitlin, Aisling, Maura, Michael, Rory, Michael, Genevieve, Clare, Julia, Matthew and Mary; and one great-grandchild, Haley.
