John J. McGarry John J. McGarry, Esq., a prominent and well-known citizen of Washington township, died at his residence about 5 miles northwest of DeWitt on Thursday last, of pneumonia, of which he had been ill nearly two weeks. He had been attending the United States District Court at Dubuque as a juror and was called home on account of illness of his son. He was suffering all the time with a severe cold, which soon developed into pneumonia and in spite of the utmost skill of his medical attendants, terminated in his death. The funeral took place at St. Patricks church Villanova, with burial at the cemetery of that place on Saturday morning last. Mr. McGarry was a little more than 52 years of age, was born in Ohio and came to this vicinity in the late 50s. His wife was Mary Lawler, daughter of the late Patrick Lawler Esq., of Washington township. He leaves a family of eight children besides his wife to mourn his loss. He was an accurate man of affairs and held important township offices during his residence among us. He had been for a long time one of the most useful members of the Board of Directors of the County Agricultural Society, and of the Farmers Insurance Company of this county. ANTHONY McCOY Mrs. Anthony McCoy, 82, 402 5th Ave. DeWitt, died at 6:05 p.m. Saturday in DeWitt Community Hospital, where she had become a patient that day. McGarry, daughter of the late John and Mary Lawlor McGarry, was born July 1, 1880 in Washington Township. On Feb. 25, 1908, she married Anthony McCoy in St. Patrick's Church at Villa Nova. They farmed in the area, moving to DeWitt 17 years ago. Mrs. McCoy was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Joseph's parish. Surviving are the husband, one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Beatrice) McGlynn of DeWitt; one sister, Mrs. W. J. Spain of Petersville; two brothers, John J. and Leo McGarry of DeWitt; and four grandchildren. McGarry, 71, of Colorado Springs, formerly of DeWitt, died Saturday in his home. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Villa Nova, Iowa, with the Rev. David Steinle officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Blazek Funeral Home, DeWitt, where a rosary will be recited. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Villa Nova. Mr. McGarry was born Jan 26, 1918, in DeWitt, to John and Mary McDevitt McGarry. He married Beatrice Behan August 29, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. He farmed north of DeWitt for about 25 years, retiring in 1974. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Leo (Kathleen) Gellan of Ruthven, Iowa, Patricia Penny of Colorado Springs, and Mrs. David (Susan) Lund of Milan, Ill.; two sons, Daniel of Mankato, Minn., and Joseph of Colorado, Springs; 16 grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Leo (Rosalie) Trimble of DeWitt.
