Leo D. Spain, 82, of The Alverno, Clinton, formerly of Petersville, died today in Mercy Hospital in Clinton. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Immaculate Conception Church, Petersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday in Hanrahan Funeral Home, DeWitt, with a rosary recited at 8 p.m. He was born April 1, 1900 in Petersville, to William J. and Mary McGarry Spain. He was a retired farmer and a lifelong resident of the Petersville area. He was a member of Knights of Columbus. Survivors include three brothers, Ambrose of Delmar, Paul of Charlotte and Ronald of Goose Lake; and a sister, Vivian Goodall of Delmar. He was preceded in death by twin brothers and a sister. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Al (Donna) Determan of DeWitt, Mrs. Gene (Patricia) Held of East Moline, and Mrs. Mel (Diane) Seng of Davenport; four sons, Duane and Dean, both of Maquoketa, Alan of Goose Lake, and Dennis of DeWitt; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Vivian Goodall of Delmar; and two brothers, Paul of Charlotte, and Ronald of Goose Lake. She attended Clinton County country schools and high school. She and her husband farmed in the Delmar until 1985. In her early years, she taught in Clinton County rural schools. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Delmar, and its Altar and Rosary Society.
